Title: I am in a very bad mood....
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 27 October 2012, 19:07:59
With my car....

Especially given the recent LPG unreliability, and the fact it's changing roughly into top gear despite complete fresh ATF and metal thrust washer...

If it fails it's MOT on Wednesday next week, Its going to be pulled into a thousand different peices, and there will be a 530 diesel on the drive  in it's place >:(

Jamesv6cdx > to the pub.

And me.
I waited ages for it to stop raining so I could change the steering idler.
Jacked the car up, undid the nuts and pulled the idler down noting horrendous play in it.
On trying to break the ball-joint loose I discovered horrendous play in that as well.
No wonder it wanders really badly.
So, I put it back together and went to the pub.
New cross shaft to be ordered on Monday.

This may be a silly question, but have you recently changed the leads? I ask as on the auto 24v sennys and carltons, if the quality of the leads wasnt as good as GM, they would affect the gearbox ECU and it gave all sorts of driving/ gear change problems.Just a thought.

Via the coil pack, which sits directly above the plug:

530d isn't quite that wise. Massive injectors cost a fortune just to refurb. Numerous pumps and filter in the fuel system all play up with proper miles. Multi link suspension bushes are a bugger to diagnose. Hedgehogs fail. Head unit and dash displays loosing pixels... And of course, don't forget the essential swirl flap ectomy.

And if auto the box can't take a chip upgrade.

Sp apart from that...

With LPG or a diesel, combined with DIY service + cheap parts, not a lot can beat the Omega in terms of running costs. Trouble is with 5 Series, I don't like any of the later shapes.

This is the only shape i like:

So all in all just like most other cars then?  :-X

Personally it's the E60 530D LCi M Sport Model that i'm interested in so will only comment on that.

Swirl flap blanks are cheap and easy enough to fit (inlet easy to remove)

Dash displays loosing pixels isn't something i've heard of although LCD panels will be available in the same way as the Sharp LCD panels are available for CID's.

I know there can be issues with the iDrive controller that sits in the rear wing and can get soaked and destroyed by leaking sunroof drain tubes that have a design fault that stops debris flushing through (they are crimped so narrower and get blocked), easily fixed just like we know how to keep an eye on Omega Scuttles!

Suspension, can't really comment apart from the fact that every Omega (4 in total) i've owned has had to have new shocks, springs, wishbones, pollybushes, donuts, droplinks etc etc to get them to drive how they should.....

DPF removal is also a viable option and should release a few more ponies.

Vanos failure, viscos fan failure, leaking door membranes... Then there's the BMW tax on parts and no trade club.

E60 is way too new surely..? £££££ :o

To be fair, if the car is still on the road it would more than likely have had the Vanos problem sorted (if the engine was a model affected) and also had a replacement viscous fan.  I have personally found BMW parts to be no more expensive than that of the Omega.  Sensors etc are similar in price.

That said, I suffered heavier costs for suspension parts due to them being Aluminium (V8) whereas the Derv models and 6Pot Petrols have Steel Suspension components, which, are comparable in cost to the Mig.

For James;

At the moment yes, but I'm hoping to run the DTi for another couple of years which would coincide with the current model reaching the second hand market in decent numbers as they come off leases, which in turn should push the price of E60's into more affordable (for me) territory.
