Hi, I am sure loads of people have done this already. I would like to install one of my old IDE hard drives into my dual core SATA desktop PC running Vista. EBay.co.uk will likely be my source of parts.
There are spare bays but fixing the hard drive in place looks a bit tricky. Q 1 Is there a bay adapaptor?
SATA data lead. I will need one of these though could get by for a while using the DVD drive cable. Q2 Anything special to watch out for - e.g. 90degree bend on one end.?
Power connection. Sata uses different to IDE (PATA?) There are two Sata spare power connectors. Q 3 What is there to convert one to the other? I have found this device. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320916558292?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 Is that all I need for both data and power for one device. ? Does it just hang in the PC somewhere?
Thanks in anticipation

A1. Any 3.5" drive will fit in a 3.5" bay sata or IDE
A2. You will need an IDE cable, going on the age of your pc, there will be more than likely IDE connectors on the mobo as well as SATA.
A3. Again you will probably find the psu has a spare connector on the loom for the IDE drive.

You are right, there is an IDE connector on the motherboard. Brill
There are two spare power connectors on the power supply loom but they are for SATA devices.
So will that Ebay connector power up my IDE drive?

No, you need a SATA to Molex convertor

there are also 3.5 to 5.25 converters so you can use 5.25 bays also..
and if there are no ide ports on motherboard there are converter cards..
