Title: Howto remove sump 2.5TD?
Post by: KooPa on 29 October 2012, 18:00:52
Hi folks.
I got a Omega B 2.5 TD.
I've got a small hole in the engine oil sump and needs to get it welded or replaced. I hope it can be welded as a new sump costs £500 here in Norway.

The problem is to remove the sump, as the sump is lying over the traverse, making it harder to remove.

I have thought of 2 possible solutions, what do you think will be the best alternative, or du you have another alternativer?

1. Remove the traverse with all that follows while holding the engine up with an engine hoist.

2. Lift the engine up 15-20 centimeters or so, so I can drop the sump and slide it out.
It may seem like the easiest way, but I'll guess I need to disconnect a lot of hoses and cables, and possibily the exhaust.

It should be mentioned that I will replace the steering box? (the part that connects the steering wheel with the wheels) at the same time. Another tough job from what I can tell...

not easy but quickest!
unbolt engine mountings, jack with spreader plate on sump , jack it as high as possible, then support engine in this postion with engine hoist or blocks of wood under engine mountings so it stays high, unbolt sump, lower as much as possible, then put arm in sump and unbolt oil pick up pipe from engine let it drop into sump and then slide sump out, thats how i did it!!

Thanks for quick reply's.
So I need to unbolt the oil pickup pipe too. Good to know so I don't just try to rip it off  :y

Dropped the sub-frame off mine ..... and didn't need to remove the oil pick-up!

Supported the engine with a webbing strap hung from a JCB back bucket around the front crank pulley, as I reckoned that the manifolds aren't man enough in the absence of any lifting brackets.

You'll need to precisely mark the subframe-to-chassis position prior to removing it though - else your caster angles will be out of true.

That's how I did it, anyway .....  ;)

I had the same problem about too weeks ago so what I did was unbolt the eengine mounts and and lift the engine a couple of centimeters no need to dislocate anything and u will be able to manover it out. But when I was putting on the new sump I realised I had to drop the sub frame . Cause when ur putting on a sump with gasket or gasket sealer you have to be able to push it straight up so you can't put on a sump on this car with out dropping the sub frame and steering mechanism it's only a few nuts and bolts. And it will make life so much easier to drop the sub farme in the first place and the steering mechanism
Il post some photos later on easiest way to prop engine
Here's wat happened to my sump

hook the ratchet strap hook to the engine mount brackets

handiest thing is to leave the wish bones and anty role bar connected as less bolts to undo and wish bones are hard to get out with out disconnecting them from the back of the hub.
hope these help! :)

Allright then, you convinced me to drop the sub-frame.
A small hole there, GaryC2.5td
Now I just need to schedule the time needed.

Sold the car yesterday, so I never got to fix it.
Sure I've could get more if I fixed it, but to say it gently I was sick of the car.

Just wanted to tell you guys. I hate it when forum treads just die out with no conclution.
