Title: Omega insurance, is it worth paying fully comp?
Post by: olicrowell on 25 April 2008, 21:07:37
Hi, just a warning to Omega owners, I was recently a proud owner of a V 6 which was wrecked by a foreign driver not used to traffic lights. It ran perfectly for 10 years and was written off in 2 seconds. I had spent £3000 on keep in good top conditon. Direct line offered me £800 max for a brilliant car, whats the point of fully comp ins.  John

Peachy as my Mig is it's only worth a grand or thereabouts so TPFT for me, £180 with 9 points. Down to 3 points now so will look again @ renewal time. If not much difference might go Fully Comp. but as a rule on a low value car, no point.

Yep, agree with that.

What I find stupid is why they bother to ask you what the value of the car is and then send you a certificate saying 'market value'..... in other words you may have paid a bit more for a decent example with a warranty etc etc but regardless of what you paid they'll only pay bottom book.... quick enough to take your money though!!!

It would make sense if they gave you the true value to you of the car, i often wonder when i renew and they ask the value coz i know they'll only give me the book value of my motor which unfortunately with these fine cars is bugger al.
Never understood it because they calculate the premium based partly on the value of the vehicle so they know the risk they are insuring against so why not pay out :-???

Robbing barstewards, thats why >:(

I agree, not worth the effort especially after they remove your excess...but in myt case a) FC is cheaper than TFT and b) FC I can drive other cars on the insurance policy...

Interestingly a lot of companies are stopping the ability to drive other (insured in their own right) cars on your policy. I don't think I can drive another insured car TPFT on my Direct Line FC policy anymore, so am now a named driver on other policies.

Ditto, only time I have ever had a car written off was an Opel Manta, cost me £700.00, insurance co offered me £1200.00 minus £30.00 if I wanted to keep the car.

I have also been told not to accept the first offer an insurance company makes you.

FC gives you cover no matter how damage/loss caused; it will provide a loan car whilst matters are sorted; it covers you for your windscreen, and covers you (TP) for driving other cars :y.  In addition my FC (via the AA) is only a few quid dearer ( £48 per month) than TPFT.  I believe FC is really worth it and for the peace of mind :y.

In fact my insurance has come down from  six years ago when I paid £86 per month  :'(  to cover a 3.0 Elite.

Take care....  This does not happen automatically!!  Read the small print!!

Both my son and daughter have fully comp policies for their cars but IT DOES NOT give the DOC (driving other cars) extension.  Thats how some companies pare off a few shillings to make the premium more competative on renewal....

Whats more, i have contacted numerous insurance underwriters during the course of my day to day work where the 'I'm fully comp and can drive anything' line is used.

You would be shocked at how many folks are not covered and get nicked as a result...   ;)

No, this can depend on the age of the young FC driver as to whether of not they can drive ANY other car  (I used to work in a Cornhill Direct call centre).

You are right  :y that it is always worth checking with your insurance company, and the person who owns the other car if they are happy to let you drive it under TP cover.  Can be better to go on their insurance! ;)

Due to my age, gender and driving record, I don't have any problem  with any of this. :y

Oh to be able to actually choose have fully comp. In Spain once your car is "old" it isn't an option. Not worth it !!

So it is Third party, fire theft and windows for me. You insure the car not the person. Anyone can drive it so long as they are over 25. All insurance here compulsarily includes breakdown recovery.

The daft thing for me is the car is valued at - wait for it 5000 euros (about £4000!) When was the last time you saw any Elite ten years old make that sort of money? Course S/H cars here are daft money.

when i insured both my cars they refused 3rd party  as its not cost effective compared to fully comp
my omega is £22pm
vectra is 17pm
so i cant complain

a lot of insurance companies have abolished the cover to drive other cars in the last year or so,it,s worth checking before you do .

Driving other cars is usually only automatic if you're over 25... (think i just slip in there!!) but only basic legal cover & what's commonly overlooked is the owner of the "other car" has to be insured for your ins. to cover the borrowed vehicle, ie:- if they're not insured for thier own vehicle you CANNOT drive it on your other vehicle clause.
Some posts have said ins.cos. are thinking of withdrawing other car cover. I hope not as i sometimes drive friends cars.
Another thing to check next renewal. ::)

I have just renewed my insurance yet again through the AA and am insured by Provident Insurance  plc and I am still covered for driving other vehicles "not owned by policy holder".  This then is still the case with AA brokered insurance policies. :y :y
