I posted recently that the long running battle with Post Office and Legal and General over their cynical and immediate cancellation of house insurance cover when my mother in law died was getting resolved - well today the cash settlement of £220 was received which more or less compensates for the huge increase I had to pay for empty property insurance.
So good start - then I have been trying to get internet banking as I look after my parent's affairs. HSBC said you need a Power of Attorney. These things take months to get - but I now have one for each parent - filed with HSBC. They send me the log on pack - and it does not work.
We cannot authorise this they say - we need to speak to your parents - doh!!
My parents are 220 miles away - one in a home one in hospital - hence point of Power of Attorney.
Another complaint has now been launched as I am not prepared to spend inordinate amounts of time speaking to the morons who are employed to handle these situations WITHOUT proper training by HSBC and a proper understanding of the position.
This happened exactly in the same way when I managed to get telephone banking set up for them - also resulted in complaint and apology and box of wine.

Yep. My parents have a similar issue. My dad is deaf and can't use a telephone, yet for anything in his name (and a lot of stuff in joint names) that needs organising over the phone, they will not accept it if he politely asks if he can put his wife on the phone since she can hear it. Nope. Must be talking to him personally. Except he can't hear them. >:(
Cretins reading from a script without an ounce of discretion or common sense allowed into the call centre. ::)

We were lucky with our POA's. We did it for mother and mother-in-law. Ours was called Enduring POA. Shortly after, the government moved the goalposts, Changing the name and making it more awkward, and costing a fair bit to do.
With ours, once the parents signed, it authorised us to take care of their affairs. No legal crap to go through.
In the case of my mother, we have now been to Barclays and activated it, got online banking and all is great. We had to take the documents, etc, proof of ID, which were sent to head office , then returned to us with the authorisation details.
Have not activated the mother-in-laws yet, and I think that maybe HSBC, so they better not give me any crap, or I will be on to the powers that be!!!!! :y

I have all of my mums passwords/card numbers. If anything happens I will simply empty the account(s).

Being a 3rd Party signaturey on the Account(s) also helps.
