hi guys . Ok did a full service on my step son in law's mondeo today. Everything was so easy. However when it came to draining his oil the sump plug was over tightened and was rounded off and we couldn't get it off :-( my initial thought was to get a punch and chisel on it but sadly i broke mine last month. Was just wondering if i could remove the oil filter would it drain through there instead? :-)

try molegrips to undo nut - oil filter removal wont get all oil out mate

Yes! Burn the oil out!!! ;D ;D ;D

No it won't drain out the filter. Mole grips, stilsons or similar? Weld a nut on the end of the rounded plug? And hope the threads aren't chewed up when you get it out (ally sump? uh oh) Or I personally would leave well alone and vacuum the oil out through the dipstick hole.

vacuum it out the dipstick hole?? how do i do that??? that sounds perfect\!!!

Pumps are available to do the job that way.Tbh Im not a fan of that method, but each to their own. If I were you I would take it to college and get a nut welded onto the sum plug so you can undo it.

cheers albus and each to their own. what dont you like about the vcauum?

The vacuum pumps are available from Machine Mart for about £30 IIRC
I've tried them on a number of cars - with mixed results.
On the V6 Omega they work very well, easily extracting all the oil quite easily. On the PSA Hdi engines however it takes ages and dosn't get all the oil out either :-\

cheers lincs... is this what you mean...

When you drain the oil from a hot engine via the sumplug you will also drain much of the sediment & crud which sits in the bottom of the sump and blocks the oil strainer eventually.Pumping it out of the dipstick hole leaves that stuff undisturbed where it is imo.
I would rather remove the sump and give it a good clean while it was off than use a siphon pump personally.

honestly everything is a piece of piss on this car. SPs changed in 5 mins, breather pipe (singular ::)) cleaned out in 1 minute, battery terminals spruced, brake fluid looked clean and full, air filter changed in 2 mins, coolant really clean and full, washer fluid topped up. job done :y

After a V6 most things are easy.Steve. ;)

i had to apply some heat to the sump bolt and then a nice long cold chisel and a couple of taps and it just came lose, pop it over sometime if you want me to have a go,and i may also have a sump for it if its easier to change that, give me a call after monday and il let you know about sump :y

Similar - the one I have is the Pela 6000 :y

I fully agree with this view - but presented with a V6 drain plug that refused to be removed I used the pump to drain the sump - which was then sorted after it was removed. I didn't fancy taking it off when full of oil. Used a similar technique to drain ATF from an automatic gearbox. :y
The state of the sump was truly terrible with tar like sediment. Needless to say that it was all cleaned out.

An intelligent approach imo Robert.I just dont like them to be used (as is the case in many garages) to change the oil on a regular basis. :y

Smarts don't have a sump plug by design so oil has to be removed via the dip-stick tube. I've removed the sump from SWMBO's car after using my Pela vacuum pump & there was sod all left in there. :y :y
