Hi,
Ive just had my head done on a Z22XE and now I have a Vacuum pipe that comes from the gearbox floating around and I don't know where it goes?? I can hear a sssssss noise coming from around the throttle body and when the engine is switched off, its more noticable but stops in seconds and the butterfly resets and then silence. the hose comes from the auto box and that is all I can tell you....
Symptons are as follows:
Lumpy idle especially when cold
Bad gear changing, (hangs onto gears until you back off the throttle or kick down)
Doesn't accelerate through gears as it should do.
Any ideas where this pipe goes as next weekend the fuel rail comes off and then possibly the inlet manifold to try and find it. I'm hoping that if we know where it goes, we can push it on without the strip down!
Thanks in advance :D

Autobox breather pipe, doesn`t connect anywhere, open to atmosphere.
Vac leak, spray carb cleaner around all vac line areas whilst idling, any change in idle will determine where leak is

Thanks Rob, I have been looking around the forum and noticed word of a breather, I'll get onto that before the strip down next weekend, would this normally go up into the engine bay?? I will report back at the weekend

a crook DIS pack / leads can make the car run lumpy so the ECU tries to compensate opening up the idle control valve which makes the hissing sound...I had the same problem

Tonight I changed the Coil pack (£95!), and it hasnt stopped the Ssssssssssssssss. I'm not sure if its running better, seems to be but then I might just be hoping. Further more, I have an issue with the gearbox since all this happened, Its hanging on to gears too long, then sometimes its losing drive followed by a Clunk and selects a gear but then sometimes it goes into safe mode? wont change gear and seems to be in a high gear. Is the auto box run on a vacuum system? could this be caused by the problem im having? Also, can the gearbox solenoids be changed without stripping the box down?
This car is beginning to be a bit of a money pit :-\

Boggy....I am no mechanic, but I would suggest before you keep on spending out, check for fault codes, using the paperclip or pedal test, whichever is applicable to your car. There is a video in the maintenance section which I found to be brilliant. Also check for spares on here...so many of our chaps have bits and pieces which will save you a fortune. :y Or...get it Tech2'd for a fault code.
* to OOF mechanics....I hope this is advice helpfully given, as this is usually the first advice you give

Will do thanks :-)

If you want you can pop over to me mate on Sunday and can check it over? not far from you mate

I've been given a few things it could be, my mechanic is going to try a couple of things on Saturday morning, if I'm no further along I'll ring you, I had a message from you, I assume its your number in the message? Cheers

Hi guys,
A quick update on my issues, I was told by a friend on facebook that the EGR valve could be stuck open and was choking the engine, I was out in the truck last night so couldnt test the theory so when i finished tonight I first tried running the engine and selecting drive with sports mode on, ( I noticed the light goes of in safety mode), the light did go off, i unplugged the EGR valve and tried again, the light stayed on and i drove it home, although the vacuum leak sound was present, the car drove much better but still a little lumpy. It seemed to get better when warm. Now, I have a second EGR valve in the boot that rattles? maybe not stuck open? I will try this on saturday as we are taking the inlet manifold off to look for a vaccum hose off unless anyone here can say that the EGR valve would emit this SSSSSssssssssssss sound if stuck open? If this is the case then my problem here is solved by trial and error :P
Then its the thumping into gear and holding onto first for too long in economy which could just be the speed sensor, no biggy at this stage, I've also ordered a TPS to fit which was the original error code when I purchased the car.

Hi, egr valve swapped and still the same, leak found to be around the injector. Now I need to ring vauxhall and order some seals. Hopefully this will be the end. Symes, have you a diagnostic computer you can plug in? Tried calling you

no mate buy have injector seals tor 2,5-welcome to them if any good :y

Hi, I'll check if they are the same, if they are, I'll ring you. Cheers

Two years ago i had the same type of noise..hissing from around the throttle body and no one could find it...in the end i took it into my friends garage and he sorted it out.....from memory he said that at the back of the 2.2 engine hidden away behind the throttle body area is some kind of steel box that bolts on to the engine and has a gasket between it and the block...that was the air leak and he changed the gasket and it cured it and my car then ran properly again...he also stated that it was a pig to do....may be someone on here can elaborate more :y.

the box on the back of the head you are on about is what the EGR valve sits on, and if your car isn't FBW, it will sit the DID pack also, I think coolant and Exhaust gas pass through this, however, the problem I have though has turned out to be a leaky Injector Seal, After searching the internet all weekend reading all sorts of horror stories about dealers not supplying just the seals, Skurrays Vauxhall in Kidlington, Oxford have ordered the Seals in for me, 8 in total for all 4 injectors at a total of around £25! better than about £100 per Injector :P So, fingers crossed all my woes will end once fitted, then onto the gearbox and steering/suspension :-/

Last year I had the same problem after replacing head gasket on my omega 2.2 2001. I did almost everything a mec can but all failed. Albs suggested to change the seals and soon after changing the problem was gone.
