Title: Damn flight weight limits
Post by: tunnie on 06 November 2012, 09:34:05
I've potentially been offered free accommodation in St Anton, Austria (1,400ft) any time this winter, thinking of spending a week out there (funds allowing) as a friend has an apartment for 3 months. But looking into weight limits I don't know how people take their snowboards & gear on flights.

Swiss Air offer free Sports baggage, but limited to 18kgs. Easyjet will shaft you £20 for a standard checked bag & £55 for a sports bag & additional weight. But it only takes you from 20kg's to 32kgs in total!

Last time I went to French Alps (coach trip, so no weight limit) my board bag was so heavy, it must have been around 50kgs. Add to fact I would be crashing in his flat, I would need to take airbed & other stuff too.

Anyone got any recommendations for flying with Sports gear?

Crunching numbers, if 3 of us go at the same time a road trip is lot cheaper. Big ask for the 2.2 LPG though  :-\

I'm surprised you were looking at Swiss Air. Surely the easiest way is to fly to Salzburg. BA, Ryanair and Easyjet all fly scheduled there, plus there are many charter flights from UK airports during the winter months.

At this link you can take a look at both the scheduled and charter flights for 2012/13:

Could you post the stuff in advance and ditto for return?

I bought a small but heavy carpet and was shocked at how much Easyjet2air wanted. Solution was £40 of postage.

Well Zurich is significantly closer, ideally I want to fly to Innsbruck  :-\

I refuse to fly RyanAir, the advertised price is no way near what you pay.

BA offer no additional baggage allowance for sporting equipment, everything must be inside 23kgs. (unless you buy more weight)

More than 23kg and less than 32kg @ £40 each way  :o

Could do, but my sports gear is quite expensive. Plus postage costs prob quite a lot  :-\

Fair comment about Zurich, though Salzburg has exellent train connections according to this site:

http://www.st-antonamarlberg.co.uk/getting_to_st_anton.html (http://www.st-antonamarlberg.co.uk/getting_to_st_anton.html)

Interestingly, Freidrichshafen is the closest airport and is served by Monarch, but only from Manchester. A week from 29/12 to 5/1 with 23kg, for example, would cost £128.96 return, which is hardly expensive, IMHO. But you would need to get to Manchester first...  ;) ;D

UPDATE: Despite what that website said, Monarch also fly from Gatwick to Freidrichshaven.  :y :y

I'd seriously consider driving, but remember LPG not allowed on Eurotunnel.

Most are around that figure, Swiss was £120, SleezyJet was £90, but then you have to add in a bags.

But then you need to add in transfer at approx £50/80 (train from Zurich, return was £79)

So flying looks like £200 approx + possible extra baggage charges.

Car, including getting ADAC cover for Euroland & fuel + crossing came out at £130 return assuming 3 people went.

I thought their weight limits were 32kg for sports + 20kg for your luggage. I've flown with EasyJet before to Geneva with bike bag and luggage, no problems.. There has been some talk on the MTB forums that the T and C's don't make it quite clear.

Looks like up to 32kg, but for skis and snowboards you have to "Contact Tour Operator/Travel Agent"

If I were you, I'd just call the number shown and ask. 0871 225 3555 (calls cost 10p per minute plus network extras)  :y

1 bag, 1 sporting item

total allowance 2 items @ 32kg total
1 item must be a genuine sporting good as defined
You may distribute weight between items as desired

Hummm don't think driving is an option now  :(

Theoretically snow chains on summer tyres can be used as an alternative to winter
tyres where the road is heavily covered with snow and no damage to the road
surface is caused by the snow chains.  In practice, because road conditions and the
weather can not be predicted, use of winter tyres is effectively compulsory

Rental stuff is shite, I like my own boots, bindings, safety gear & board. Going to get cheap set of scales and weigh what my bag is, as I don't actually know & need to find out.

Or throw a set of winter tyres on & re-sell them afterward when the snow sets in here for a profi.. I mean, for what you paid less depreciation.

I agree. Also, some time ago when kids wanted to try boarding, I stopped at a Decathlon store on the way and kitted them out with new but cheap stuff for much the same as rental cost, but they got to keep the kit  :y . I haven't been skiing for a while, but when I do I drive, and take my own, right now it's all in shed at bottom of garden  :(

Either drive, or cough up the baggage.

I guess my golf bats are around the same weight, we all just pay for them - think it was Monarch last time, and it was a fixed fee (no idea how much, bro paid :D), any weight (wasn't weighed anywhere). Just as well if you saw how balls I took ::)

Personally, I would take the car, as you know. Not Eurotunnel though, despite having a free ticket (I think, the conversation ended with me suggesting they used it as a deep cleanse toilet paper).

Get four steelies and you can get Goodyear UG-8 for a fiver more per corner in 195/65R15 91H - that's what I run in winter, I actually prefer them to the summer 17's  :-[
