Hi,Iv'e got a problem with my 2001 2.2 diesel, charge light on the dash is staying on iv'e changed the alternator (original seemed a little slow to come up to voltage with everything on but was charging) replaced the 120 amp with a 140 amp (only one I could source locally) but the light still staying on.Don't know if its a relay problem as I can't find a circuit diagram for the 2.2 diesel(Y22DTH),anyone with similar problem or any ideas ( also noticed that the light is as bright as the handbrake light pre start up but when engine running charge light gets a little brighter also it did fluctuate on first start up after 140 amp unit fitted)also 140 amp unit showing 15+ volts at battery terminals,so guys any ideas.

15 volts is too high. I reckon the 2 alternators either aren't directly compatible or the regulator had failed on the replacement one. You might well be able to replace the regulator for not too much money.
Some alternators these days have intelligent regulators that "slow start" so it can often be a few seconds after startup before the correct voltage is reached.

yep too high....believe it to be around 13 and a half amps???...appears to be the replacement alternator maybe..

Thanks guys for the replies so far but both alternators are showing the same problem ( dash light on ) but doing a bit of running round the web the majority of parts sites seem to list the 140 amp alternator as the original type, but the 120 amp one is the one that iv'e taken off, at the time of removal it was showing about 13.3-5 volts with nothing running but dropped to about 12-12.3v under load slowly coming back to about 13ish volts, all measurements are taken at battery terminals. So my next questions are
1,what is the proper alternator 140 or 120 amp
2,Is the regulator seperate to alternator
3,could it be relay a problem?
NB. 140 amp alternator from 03 vectra

This relay came up during my searches (you have to read the header to the part to see why iv'e included this link!)
