Title: I did it! -DIS Pack
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 14 November 2012, 17:30:08
Well the replacement DIS pack is now fitted and the engine itself is at last running well :y :y

However, according to the local exhaust specialists who have now inspected the system, one of the middle exhaust boxes has blown (probably due to the misfire), with a "bulge" on top and will be replaced for £118 once I have the money next week, with an MOT thereafter!  The professionals can do that job!

Although I scratched my arms to buggery again, you can see the void where the old DIS pack was.  As a point of interest, you will note I did not have to remove the wiper motor, but on the advice of TB it really helped taking the cables out of the plastic tray and moving all out of the way with greater flexibility. :y :y :

The old DIS pack was definitely the problem!:

............and the replacement (a Bosch) about to be installed:

Overall this exercise was VERY satisfying and took a relatively short amount of time. 8) 8)

I just wish I had replaced the DIS pack with the replacement spark plug leads all in one go.

How many times I have stripped the bits off the top of the engine over the last few days I have lost track, to add to all the numerous previous occasions.  I reckon I could now do it all blindfolded!! ;D ;D

Thanks for all the useful comments I received :y :y :y :y :y :-*

I know one thing, without the OOF and associated diagrams / advice / maintenance guides, I would not have had the confidence to complete this work :-* :-*

I was 'trained' of Austins, Morris's and early Fords, not the 'new' nightmare cars with multiple leads / pipes / sensors everywhere, and the blessed plenum in the way.  On the older cars I could strip and engine and rebuild it in a day, but with these beasts you cannot even test the engine running without putting so much back before you do! ::) ::)

But we love the Omega really! :D :D ;D ;D

I'd be inclined to get a decent cheap exhaust from Eternal (about £100 for the 3 pieces).

Not a bad job to change, just be aware the front bolts can shear, needing a drill and a tap set.

Well you live and learn, I didn't realise there was a 3.0 facelift! thought they were all 3.2

Early facelift v6,s were 2.5 & 3.0,then changed to 2.6 & 3.2 - around 2001 iirc.
I probably have to do this dispack change (and stat change) myself sometime in the not too distant future.Got a misfire sometimes on gas and as I have a spare dispack might as well change it to find out if  thats the cause.

No those built in 2000 and I believe up to 2002 were 3.0's.  The 3.2's were a late addition.

On egay, search foe eternalcar. There sites are ropey, but they do respond to messages sent early in the day

..............and to think with mine it all started with a service, a plug lead falling apart, and me trying to repair it, with afterwards starting the engine and running it with a misfire!! ::) ::) ::)

That will teach me not to be so stupid and use my mechanical brain :D :D

Got a spare set of leads too.Thing is do I change them at the same time ? Might see what the old dispack looks like when it comes out and see how lucky I feel that day. ;)

I would now, with hindsight, replace all at the same time.

My DIS pack was certainly on the way out with or without my spark lead / misfire problem.  Just look at the right hand side of the picture:

Probably caused by water leaking onto it from a leaky scuttle. ;)

 :y

First job to do is check for scuttle leaks after fitment and seal up so you dont have to replace sometime soon again  :)

Its 12yrs old, and done X miles, it probably hasn't done so bad, esp if it was firing a failing lead :y

That said, MV6 is still on its original, so they can last 14yrs/192k

Yep!  As with a lot of design features on these V6's. :-X

As said before even the dear old Austin mini was easier to work on for access to the plugs, leads, distributor, dynamo, water pump, etc! ::)

Yes I agree TB, the old DIS did well for 12 years and 125k miles.

Tend to regularly clear out the scuttle drains Albitz, and in fact never found water around the area.

Not connected to scuttle drains. The water leaks at the scuttle join, about two thirds of the way across the scuttle towards the nearside. Then runs down into the rear of the engine compartment, attacking the dispack or the rearmost part of the coil pack on DBW engines. Solution is to seal the join with silicon sealant.
