Title: Overcooling and temperature sensors

Hi all,

My TD omega seems to be running very cool, it rarely gets above 85 on the gauge even during prolonged standing in traffic.

I know the thermostat is the most likely culprit but I don't like replacing things unless sure they are faulty.

Where is the coolant temp sensor located and how can I test it? Does anyone have the resistance values it should give at different temperatures?

Also, what is the sensor that screws in to the fuel filter housing? Mine is in 2 bits so needs replacing.

Check the thermostat the easy way....

Start the engine from cold  ie overnight, let it run and stand with your hand on the top pipe to the radiator, the one that comes directly from the thermostat to the radiator. This should remain cold for a long while, than there should be a sudden surge of heat as the thermostat opens, at this stage the engine temp should be just below normal. If the pipe warms up slowly as the engine warms then the thermostat is stuck open and the normal temp will not be reached.

Any idea what sort of temp is normal? I'm guessing 90-95?

midway on the gauge is always a good approximation .. :)
