I've been struggling to get hot air into the cabin for a while even when the engine is nice and hot.
Had a play around with it yesterday.
All vacuum pipes nice and tight and correctly connected but I could not suss it out.
Out of desperation (its bloody cold out there ;D), I removed the vacuum pipe off the top of the HBV and blanked it off to keep the vacuum and hey presto, the air in the cabin is hot enough to cook with :)
Have I got a dodgy HBV or is it something else ?
Can I safely leave it this way for a while or am I going to knacker something else up ?
Have also noticed that the multi rams seam to be slow to react but that may be me talking 'dangle berries' ::):D
Its a PFL without climate control but with aircon.
Any ideas please ?

Its either a faulty HBV as you suspect, a faulty vacuum relay behind the glove box, or a faulty Control Unit .. :(
HBV is "shut off" by vacuum... so your removing the vac pipe as allowed it to "open" .....
So thing to do now ... IMHO .. is the check the vac pipe itself... with "hot" selected is there any suction at the pipe - there should not be any... if there is try a CC reset ... ignition ON but engine not running .. press OFF & AUTO together for 5 seconds .. you'll hear all the gubbins recycle .. hopefully... not sure if that works on non-CC cars ... :(
Start engine, if the suck is still there then either the controller is sending a false signal to the valve, or the valve is stuck ... the valve is up behind the glove box and is a sod to get to..... :(
Mine is so intermittent its a pain - but a new vavale has not sorted it ., so I guess its something in the controller - .. so I leave the vac pipe off and blanked ... makes very little difference to cooling in the summer anyway .. but keeps things a loverly temperature :)

Right, been driving around for most of the day.
The air temperature at the vents has been up and down every 5 minutes so i'm now looking at flushing the heater matrix out before I end up moving any sludge further around the system.
Is they a easy way to get the pipes off the matrix ?
Had a play earlier. Squeezed the plastic coller and slide it back but the buggers wouldn't shift ::)

If youve got the plastic collars to move to the correct position then it usually takes a fair bit of twisting,pulling and pushing etc. to get them to move ime. Its usually the collars themselves that I have trouble with. ;)

Yep IME too. If they've never been moved since the car was built, they'll be well 'stuck' on by those mysterious adhesion mechanisms that affect older cars.
Easy way to get them off is to get someone else to do it. :D

Does that mean I can use my 3 pound lump hammer and chisel then :-X ;D ;D
Is it worth cleaning the matrix pipe ends up with a bit of wire wool / grease them up before I hammer carefully refit the pipes :)

I'll have another play when I get a few hours to myself.
According to the missus, the weather is going to get pretty cold next month so i'd better stick it at the top of the list of things to do ;)
