Title: REAR COIL SPRINGS ELITE 2.5 V6 1999 HELP!!!
Post by: nrclarke99 on 19 November 2012, 11:45:17
Good Mornign all,

I have to replace the rear springs on my OMEGA ELITE 2.5 V6 1999 and I am a little confused as to the type of springs I require, I have read that the car may have a self levelling system and that as such only certain springs will work in conjuntion, my questions are
1/ Does this car have self levelling? and if so how can i tell
2/ Do i need specific springs for a self levelling system
3/ Can anyone suggest a supplier, I have tried various but they all either think one spring fits all or when i ask the question they are unsure also

Any help anyone can give me will be much appreciated

Kind Regards

Nathan

Welcome  :y

There are various trains of thought on this subject, which are well documented if you search through the various forums.
In the end, there is no real necessity to get special springs for SL shocks. Many have differing combinations, which is probably due to personal choice and cost.
Some of the more knowledgeable members will be along soon to give you better advice though.

Best springs accordding to the majority are kyb, springs look on line,
. If you can get a set police spec are stronger as they have a higher rating.

if the car is an Elite then self levelling was standard fitment, thats not to say it hasn't been modified since,if it has the self levelling shocks fitted an air pipe will be visible looking from underneath at the top half of the shock :y

so, the story is this ........

some cars had self-levelling rear suspension fitted at the factory, which works by supplying the dampers with compressed air from a pump under the front wing.

A lot of cars have had the self-levelling removed out of "mechanic-laziness".

You can tell if yours has self-levelling, as the rear dampers will have a small-bore air line connected into the bottom portion of the lower tube - readily viewable from the rear of the car, although you do have to get on your hands and knees.

If you have self-levelling and it still works, you need the correct springs, as they're a lower spring rate to enable the levelling to work.

If you don't have self-levelling, then you can have any of the other alternatives, such as KYB.

1, all elites have sl as standard, but it may have been disconnected to fit standard shocks. There is a basic test in maintanance.
2, SL springs go with SL shocks, but SL shocks will also work very well with any oe springs. Standard or mv6 lowered sports chassis etc. (it's the SL springs that MUST have SL shocks)
3 Kyb do standard and SL springs. SL being a bit hard to find in the catalogue, but they are there. Defo.

Personally, i'd fit standard spec springs even if it has working self levelling. Elites are very softly sprung. For comfort cruising, stick to SL. :y

GM oe springs are very expensive. Sadly.

 ;)
I put the heavy duty rear springs on mine (with the standard SL shocks) and now it does not wallow and roll as much as it did on bends with the standard KYB springs that it used to have on. The ride is just as comfortable but much smoother and I don't get seasick anymore.... :D

I am fairly certain that the KYB self levelling suspension replacement springs are part number RJ6227. That is for a saloon. Estates will no doubt be different!
