Immigrant taking a taxi test, seems he can earn £1000.00 gross per week, is this right for a taxi driver?
Just told swmbo she in the wrong job :)
Used to do a bit of weekend minicabbing when in Hertford but nothing like that, money wise. :-?

Is that black cabbing or mini cabbing?
I know that black cabs have horrific overheads from the council etc..

I taxied for 20years, its not what you take, it's what is left after expenses. It is possible to take that sort of money even up here in the North but your marriage, sanity and social life would suffer badly, you would need to do 16 hours a day, 7 days a week.Out of that £1000 you would spend over half on fuel, insurance, office fees, maintenance, road tax, N.I., accountancy fees, income tax etc. Local authority licence fees, medical, disclosure costs, and if you are taking that much beware the dreaded VAT man.

A grand a week sounds quite sweet then, even with fuel and all that.

As i was replying, Mike edited his post, before that i didnt realise the cab was on a pay as you drive deal from a company.
I assumed it was his own, and no rental was being paid (other than radio rental)

I ran my own car, a 406 HDI turbo diesel, £300 a month HP, there is an age limit on the cars used, buying new or nearly new is the way to go, about £140 a month insurance, office fee or renting a radio, £126 per WEEK, fuel to takings about 25%, ie, £1000 takings, £250 fuel, plus the rest of it, I enjoyed it and thought I would end my days in Newcastle/Gateshead driving a taxi, now I have a proper job I wouldn't go back to it, not in a million years. Also now, when I am paid it is my money, all government donations paid, no need to put anything away for the self assessment. Put 68000 miles on the 406 in its first 9 months, never missed a beat!!!
Believe me it isn't.

Good on him for going out and doing something like that......
Someone mentioned VAT, only if he turns over £67,000 per annum
Being VAT registered isn't that bad, yes you have to file a return every qtr, but there are some financial incentives if you know how to use it to your advantage

i'm a controller for a london taxi firm i have quite a few drivers earn over a grand a week and as much as £1500 in a week and thats after there car and insurance which is £250 for a mercedes e class £200 for a ford galaxy all they have to pay is there own petrol and tickets...which is approx £200 per week..depends how much dead milage i wanna cut out ....
