Title: Flood damage
Post by: Kieran on 26 November 2012, 16:56:48
Just spent most of the afternnon organising my Meriva diesel to be repaired. Drove thru some floodwater (no signage)  and the car came to a complete halt. Recovery guy said engine is probally seized. Luckly the insurance covers it but with a £400.00 excess. Be glad to see the end of this year.

Far from seized, it will be a new engine as rods will probably be bent!

Yep, engines and water in cylinders do not mix! :'( :'(

A lot of people must be finding that out at the moment, with burst engines :'( :'(

Do you need a sign to tell you the road is flooded?  ??? ???

Other cars had gone thru it with no problems and my mate was behind me in his Astra diesel and had to push me out. So yes I do need a sign.

From my experiences, it is often a case a road may have been flooded but it is passable with the water coming up to the lower part of your wheels.  THE problem comes when you meet some idiot coming in the other direction doing a crazy speed, often a 4x4 or a truck!! >:( >: The bow wave hits you and you think "....if water goes into the air intake............grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" >:( >:( >:( >:(

Why do those prats do it?  They are just thinking of themselves I suppose, and other think that if they drive at speed they will force their way through.

Even if other cars are going though, does not mean yours will. Diesels cope better with water, assuming yours is perol?

I guess you will think twice now about driving through flooded roads :)

Not quite sure why you'd think a diesel copes with water better than a petrol ...... they both suck air the same way  ;)

He's thinking back to Carburettor theory, forgetting that a modern petrol injected engine is almost identical in fuel/air delivery to a diesel ....

There is a SLIGHT advantage to a diesel in that the exhaust pressure is usually higher, due to the compression pressure being higher, which can ease the problem of water backing in up the exhaust, but a few revs usually stops that anyway .. :)

Leaking tiny amount of water from scuttle into spark plugs, causes petrols problems...

Accidental damage claimed against a fully comp policy at a guess  :-\

Doubt it will do the OPs renewal any favours though...
