Title: Mob Scooter's
Post by: omega3000 on 26 November 2012, 18:36:21
I had my first go on a mobility scooter today , just wondering if anyone here has one that can give some advice on what makes to avoid and which is most practical . Only need it for short journeys to shops and back about a mile round trip , bloke at the shop tried to sell me a 7 year old scoot for £400 which seemed a bit steep for a basic one and at that age  :-\

I asked how much the batteries were as these seem the main faults on them , he said £40 which is not bad .

All I can say EMD is that an older couple I knew used mobility scooters.  They made a mistake and got a 3-wheel version, which was unstable on uneven pavements.  They px'd it for a 4 wheel version for I think about £450.

The £400 you have been quoted for a 7 year old model seems expensive to me compared what my friends told me ;)

Yeah i wouldnt have the 3 wheeler for safety reasons , i did notice though that they all have wheelie bars at the back , not for the obvious when i inquired  ::) :-[ but for stability   :)
And the next model up was £700 , only difference was it had a canopy .

My Mum recently bought a scooter, but slipped up & bought one with small wheels so unfortunately it's not right good at kerbs. The bigger wheeled versions would be better. :y

The MIL has two. The one she brought with her to us is a four wheeler, compact and does the job but is limited on top speed. We(Mrs Varche and myself find it goes plenty quick enough). Only had to charge it once so far in five weeks. It is sued most evry other day.

You need to have a think about what use you will make of it.

The MIL has another 4 wheel scooter that can do EIGHT miles an hour. That is  fair old speed. She uses that for longer journeys.

My advise would be to buy second hand. Usual checks. How long, how many niles , does it drive well. Most are barely used and fetch diddly squat S/H. The Uncle in law 's machine was a good example.

Oh and make sure you have somewhere to carry stuff. Basket. pannier etc.

Well the shop never even mentioned the mileage and for some reason i never thought about asking  ??? I was told it could do 7 miles on full battery at about 4-7 mph , i wont be buying this one as it was just to test the water ... Interestingly i thought handlebar throttle but its all levers with auto brake when released .

Symes , i been looking on ebay an tbh they fetch silly money for anything half decent ... cant remember what make this one was but £400 for a 7 year old scoot  ::) the bigger wheeled ones are fetching £1000 + andy but i see what you mean about the curbs and small wheels  ;)

or build one of these :y

We gave away 2 little used Pride Colt 9 scooters - no market at present - some placeas are snowed under with them - look around and you could also get them for little money - these models ideal for shops and back via pavement

Just had a look at those and would be just the job with the bigger wheels too , i forgot to say the one i tried did have tiny solid wheels which would also be a problem  :(

MOT's aren't needed for any battery scoot as they are not classified as motor vehicles (hence plod can't nick you for drink/drive when you spend all day in the pub and then drive home).

PS
You can still be done for "drunk in charge", but the penalty is naff all.

I trust you have a bypass switch fitted to kill the paltry 8mph speed restriction?

When you think about it all they seem to be is a go cart with a bigger chair on and handlebars , anyone got a blueprint  ::) ;D What do you recon the sort of electric motor it would need , a frame welded together a few cogs and body panels ..job done  ???

Easier & cheaper to take a standard mobility scoot, rip it back to a rolling chassis, and then build your own body for it I reckon.

The DfT do have rules that govern what defines an electrically assisted bicycle (mainly top speed & weight), and I wouldn't mind betting there is similar legislation that defines when a scoot becomes a motorised vehicle and therefore requires insurance, etc.

I reckon there could be a real market for something like the Landy that Symes has built, although I also reckon there is a real possibility of some a$$wipe eurocrat introducing laws to stop even the most basic of fun like that.
Having said that, those rules more than likely exist already  >:(

Scoot (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PRONTO-MOBILITY-SCOOTER-SPARES-OR-REPAIR-S-/140890301292?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Mobility_Disability_Medical_ET&hash=item20cdb7636c) Something along the lines of this and then modify it  , depending on the price of spares maybe  :-\

3 wheelers very dodgy mate-4 wheeler is better and remember they are quite heavy -should you have to move it manually.
The ultraglide might be ok-if easily repaired- :y

Well i thought it was an electric trike at first but it says something about a kick start  ::) reason i thought odd about not having any need for mot  :-\ and the 43 mph it does must have some implication for mot  ???
