Some guy said oil cooler is only needed for autobahn high speeds. Speed limit in USA is usually 70 mph on highways and cooler is not necessary.
Is he the only one bypassing oil coolers?

Can't say for your side of the Pond ::) ::) but over here, the general consensus is to replace/repair as General Motors intended. Don't forget, that as well as cooling your engine oil, it also helps to warm it up when your engine is cold. :y :y :y
I thought your highways were generally limited to 55mph ;) ;)

That is speed limit for drunk drivers. ;D :)
-
What would be the benefit in by-passing it?
Keep it as is, just change anti-freeze regually :y
-
Are you referring to engine oil cooler or gearbox oil cooler?
-
I would think that temperatures in Florida can get a lot higher than they do here,so I would want cooler(s) intact and working. ;)

Engine oil cooler

Yes, but we have steering columns on left side, so engines run cooler...:)

Don`t understand your logic ???

Still fail to see what you want to achieve by doing it? If they GM went to huge expense designing it and building it with a cooler, to save money they could have not bothered.
Think its needed, no matter what the climate :y

But in America you don't have corners, how can the steering column generate any heat? :D ;D

As far as I know, the only thing GM did to Cadillac Catera, was attaching Cadillac badge. The car was designed and manufactured in Germany by Opel.
Even american Saturn has Opel designed engines: 2.2 and 3.0 (3.0 is Cateras engine)

Yep and an British built engine, The V6 has a heat exchanger not just an oil cooler - this acts both ways as the coolant heats up before the oil - it warms the oil up which prevents wear and tear then maintains the oil temp - not worth by passing if a new one is fitted using the correct sealant on the plate and the coolant is replaced at regular intervals there shouldn't be a problem with it.

Just done mine and although it was a reasonably difficult job to do, I certainly wouldn't bypass, Imo it would be a more difficult job blanking it than replacing it, as you would have to get to the pipes to blank them.
-
just makesure you use crowfoot or split socket on the oil pipe unions - not open ended spanners as they can cause the unions to distort

Cheap enough from e-bay

No just go ahead and do it. Oil is dirt cheap in America.
Just do all your changes every 2500 miles. :y

As the Master once said on here so long ago, the oil cooler also accepts heat from the coolant, allowing a faster warm up of the oil and engine generally. ...or words to that effect.
Presumably, the quicker the car warms up, the quicker it becomes economical and wears less... No?
Is this an easy fix project, or a need for further cooling ...?

That's what I said #2 ::) ::)
