Hi,
So, I've recently been getting into the Sweeney, I was too young first time round and when the film was released recently I was determined to watch the entire series before watching the movie so I had a more mature opinion of it, Also believe there are two Sweeney movies with John Thaw in.
Anyway, the reason for this post is because I am next year going to search for a complete MK1 Granada or Consul as used in the series, Will be painted up the same, would prefer the Granada but I need the right colour interior before i get the car. Anyway, that will be my project. Need to get a motorbike first though :P
-
Sounds good to me :y. I had a MK1 Granada as my first car 3.0, I loved it ;D.
-
Its the 3ltr I want, it wont be a quick project but I want something to work on that I know about, no electronics etc, plus, when My lad gets older, hes 7 at the moment, he can help me out
-
Good choice.............. :y
-
had a few in earlier years, granada/consul 2.5,2.0l, 2x 3.0l mkI granadas & a 2.6mkII i think it was. love the mkIs tbh. ;)
-
will be expensive as good one cost a lot....a guy who runs classic fords(i think) owns the car that was used in the series,he also deals in older fords :y
-
Had a 72 Mk1 Granada Ghia, 3 lit V6, metallic green with tan vinyl roof - only issues I had with it was inlet manifold gasket @40K (normal on these) and exhaust @ 105K (just as I was selling it) falling off. Was original exhaust - one piece - fitted by Fords before fiting rear subframe! - had to cut it off and fitted replacement which came in sections. Great car, very reliable and would cruise all day @ 100 mph (tried it on trip down to Cannes)

Same here, finished in Roman Bronze with a 4 speed manual box.
Cost £200 for TPFT at 17 years old with a provisional licence, and I got £20 back 4 weeks later when I passed my test.

Mine was Black and an Auto, I put curtains in it as well :). How did I get so old?
-
Just watch out for the self destructing nylon/plastic timing wheel. Mine broke on me. That said I think any surviving to this day have probably had them changed by now.
Mine was a K plate blue 3.0 manual, think GL or low model, def not ghia. I was 18 when I had it, lasted about 3 weeks before the timing wheel went. Got towed home by the RAC on a rope.

You didn't used to live on the Angell Town Estate in Brixton back in the 80's did you? ;D ;D

The idea behind the fibre intermediate gear was to quieten the cam's gear train down. It worked especially well when the teeth sheared! ;) ;) ;)

The one used in the TV series was actually a Consul with a 3 litre engine fitted.
I banger raced my dads old one.P reg 3 litre ghia auto. managed to get five full meetings out of it before it was totally wrecked and engine expired while only running on three! ;D

Aye , seen plenty of those at brayfield stadium years ago and they were good but not as strong as the rover P4's .
Not seen many mk1 granadas around lately :-\
-
Both a consul then the Granada were used in the series according to website that gave a run down on cars in the series, the Granada is the one with the spot lights, I particularly like the Bedford ck van that was high jacked for its cargo of watches I think it was?

I seem to recall there was an aluminium one available from aftermarket tuning type people. I cant believe there are any left running the fibre ones.
When they went it was just like a cam belt going. Mine managed to snap 10 out of 12 rockers I think it was. Thankfully no piston/valve damage.
Sold it the following week and then had the police round, it had been used as some kind of getaway car about 60 miles away from me :(
-
I loved the Granada, had 3 over the years. A 2.0LX, a 2.3 Ghia and a 2.9 Scorpio , that was my favourite. Couldnt half shift.
-
still got mine,a 1977 3 litre granada coupe auto

ooooooo drrrroooollll. now they are nice. :)

My eldest son was given a 3 litre ghia coupe on his RAF base a few years ago. Went all the way up there to look at bringing it home. It was a bit to tender to bring back the 300 miles. about 20 hours work welding the floor to make it safe for banger racing. got in touch with friends nephew and he drove 8 hours from Scotland to pick it up and take it home. Had it running two days later. I brought home the 2.0 Vectra the boy had bought for £50 and a box of biscuits, 10 months MOT and a load of extras factry fitted to the car.

I've always known the "Sweeney" car to be a Consul 3 litre GT [very rare]but a Granada may have been used at some point. The MK1 is the last Ford I really liked especially that Ghia coupe lovely!
-
The original gold one in The Sweeney was a Consul 3.0GT. NHK 295M-it's currently being restored (see Sweeney website). The one the garage owner has is not this one. They then had a couple of 3.0 Granada Ghia's-Gold and a Jupiter Red if I remember and then a Mk2.8iS in silver. My old man had a 3.0 manual which I was let loose on after passing my test. Would love another but they are now attracting alot of money!

If you need further information, and want to see other Sweeney cars including Ford Cortina's, look at this great unofficial site that I personally love:

I hope this clarify's all the doubt about Granada's vs. Consul's in Sweeney episodes and films!! ;D ;D ;D :y :y

Indeed TAM!! ;D ;D Obviously in 2012 they just didn't have the quality British motors to use; not even a miggy! Forgetting all the foreign (German) cars I suppose they could have used, the Insignia 2.8i could have been an equal to the Granada / Consul of old!! 8) 8) ;)
Let's just remind ourselves of that iconic title 'scene' for the original Sweeney, with the Consul and even the classic British Jag (4.2?):

Personally I wouldn't get a bike these days-gave up years ago-but then most car drivers had previously rode motorbikes BUT these days 99% of car drivers havent and are lethal towards bikers-see it everyday on A40 coming home mate-Save up ya cash-come with me to Third Thursday Car Club-Get ya Granada :y :y :y

Straight swopped it for my J reg 3000E Capri .. .which had seen better days ;) ;)
Can't remember why I got rid of it . . . but had several more Granadas after that one :y
