Title: Now tis the Garage door broken and swmbo noticed the newish 'Tow Pole'
Post by: Vamps on 16 December 2012, 22:09:25
Well, after the leak on Friday the garage door has decided to throw out it's toys, took some brute force to close it.... :'( :'( :'(  I have had a good look and the fault is with the springs / tension wire, had a play but no luck, so need a garage door mechanic or a new door, thing is we are both at work during the day.... ::) ::) ::)

Whilst swmbo was in the garage she noticed a rather substantial 'Tow Pole' I bought a couple of months ago after they were discussed on here, I had no reason to tell her and had it discretely hidden resting against the wall behind some other items - I tried telling her I had had it for years, but she could tell that it  was brand new ::) ::) ::) Mentioned something about loose screws later in the day, ::) ::) when I was looking for some screws for a minor diy job.....

Garage doors are normally straightforward to fix although you have to be careful when the springs are tensioned, obviously. Cable assemblies, pullies and springs all available as spares online. Had a spring break on ours a couple of years back. Glad I wasn't in its' path when it let go. :o

Thanks for the words of advice, my thoughts exactly I can see the bits and bobs and the springs, tried to tighten the cable but it slips again, anyway the company who fitted it are coming out tomorrow to fix, replace and tension springs and cables, their standard service £85.00 all in, not worth me injuring myself at that price...... :y :y :y

You should have hidden the pole in your trousers Mike, if your swmbo is anything like mine she'd never have noticed! ;D :y

I tried to turn it round to being a positive for her, should she ever need me to tow her, safer that a rope, that fell on deaf ears as well..... ::) ::) ::)

I repaired a snapped cable about 14 years a go. I was able to buy the cable quite easily from a local supplier.

With the tension in the springs not easy, to put it mildly. I ended up using a heavy duty ratchet strap to tension the spring to fit the cable.

I'm glad I wasn't standing under the door when the cable did break as it really came down with some force. I quickly got fed up with propping it open with a piece of wood, hence the repair.

The cable snapped where it need greasing, so I now keep them well greased.
