Title: Miggy taken off the road .......
Post by: Marie on 04 January 2013, 17:52:35
due to a belt rubbing noise.  :'(

Happens for the first 10/15 minutes on start up.

its gotten quite loud and have been searching the site for possible causes have already taken off the aux tensioner and re greased the bearings.

i have a feeling the water pump is on its way out its due in feb has been fitted since @ april 2008 and the cambelt is due in august this was replaced as a kit in 2009 when the tensioner failed.

I am really not happy driving her for a 500 mile round trip just incase the water pump gives up or even worse the tensioner. the parts should be here mid next week for me thanks to Andyc. ( got to love that man :y)

Looks like next weekend ill be replaceing the water pump cambelt tensioners coolant and may as well do an oil and filter change. just hope it dont rain  :)

Have you tried running it briefly without the aux belt?
May help your diagnosis  :y

I had the same prob just two weeks ago. I could hear the noise all over the engine but could not tell where the noise was coming from. So I removed the aux belt and shaking pulley after pulley, then I noted that the pump was gone. Changed the pump, then the noise was gone. Thanks :y

Given water pump is cambelt driven its a wise choice, it's approaching age to be done. I do mine with every belt change, not worth risk...

Double check its cambelt related though, run car for a bit with aux belt off  :y

if i am honest havent ran it with out the aux belt on yet thats the plan for tomorrow if the weather hold out.

i was confident i got rid of the noise when i greased the aux tensioner bearings as the noise disappeared after 10 mins but then i think it was just wishful thinking and it was doing the usual thing of disapearing after its been ran for a bit.

i have called the guy who im meant to be giving a lift back to work on sunday and asked if he would drive instead explained the issue and he agrees that its prob safer for us to use his car and not mine :) i have a feeling jase might try and use mine on wednesday but im going to try and convince him other wise if he does and itdoes break he can by me a new car in feb when his pension lump sum arrives lol

Went to do it remove the aux belt and thought I'd check first the noise. Well it wasn't there :-/ still not going to risk it.

If yout miggy starts quiet then get loud squeaking noise its the rear bearing on alternator-got that problem at moment on mine-got another alternator -same problem so while at work overhauled it for fitting tomorrow. So reckon you got same problem-water pump would squeak straight away on start up  :y :y

sounds plusable. i like it. it does go after 10/15mins. when you say rear bearing you mean the pully that the aux belt goes round?

how have you overhauled the alternator  bearing did you just pack it with grease and is it something i could do in my garage ?

Given water pump is cambelt driven
I have 3.0 engine, water pump is driven by driving belt, not timing (cam) belt.
Which engine do you have?

On 2.0 & 2.2 petrols, water pump is cambelt driven
