Title: who still has a paper driving licence?
Post by: Andy B on 08 January 2013, 11:52:44
Apart from the fact that the 'new' photo card driving licence only lasts for 10 yrs before you have to pay to renew it, it also mentioned......

The ten-year photocard licences will become mandatory in 2015 when the paper licences are officially phased out. A quarter of drivers are still using the old-style paper licences

DVLA wil have to send me mine, because I ain't requesting one!  ;) ;)

I passed in 2001, I then passed my big bike test in 2009, which meant a new card to show updated bike rating.

But did they reset the date it runs out? Nope!  Same as my old one >:( >:(

What I can't understand is. When I sent off for my new licence I didn't have to send a photo because they have the technology to use the one off my passport so if they can do that why can't they let you know your licence is about to or has expired like they do with the road fund licence >:(

Photocard here, had it changed when we moved 11 years ago.

Had to renew it last year which was straight forward enough thanks to having a valid passport

Yes, he would have had a license if before 1935, that year being the first for compulsory driving tests. It was introduced after the worst number of accidents ever in 1934 (7,343 killed!!) :o :o ;)

My dad never took a test, was just issued a license with every category :o,but it was during the war so I suppose things like driving tests weren't that important then.

Yep green paper one here, folded to death to fit in my wallet. Three endorsements on it, all expired years ago

No intention of renewing unless reminded. Makes me think though, if not renewed in 2015 and presented after that time, would it be invalid and therefore driving not in accordance..... ? even though it expires in 2028  :-\ :-\ :-\

Still got a paper one here...

Can find nothing official on 2015...Other than the paper counterpart of a photo license being phased out.

could find this though :

Though no new all-paper licences are now issued, if you have one these generally don't expire until you're 70, so you don't need to do anything until then unless your address or personal details change. However, by 2033 all licences must be in the photocard format; you'll receive reminders to update it closer to the time.

Once you reach 70 there's no fee to renew, and you'll then get a photocard. If you want to upgrade before then, you can apply to change your paper licence for a photocard, though it'll cost £20 and you'll need to show extra ID (see Directgov).

There do seem to be some rumours that they will 'recall' old style licenses shortly after the counterpart change in 2015.

They were and they were not.........

My father-in-law learnt to drive trucks in the Army during WW2, and he once told me that he did have to take a test.  However, it was a very simple one and it was more like a rubber stamping process!  After the war he simply had his Army driving licence converted into a full civilian one. ;)

Yep, that was me >:(
Lost my bike entitlement from the paper version. even though I had (at the time) my old pussa's driving permits for a despatch rider they wouldn't accept them, they had to have the original pass certificate. I even got a copy of it from where I took the test (RM Poole) but that was still not sufficient for DVLA. I gave up after 2 years realising I would have to re-take all the tests again if I wanted to ride a bike, lucky (unlucky?) I was not a bike owner at the time, jack knows what might have transpired then.

I may or may not do the CBT, depends how I feel really....

That would explain it Henry.  The country was too busy "digging for Victory" to worry about driving licenses!  They just wanted the farmers to get on with moving farm produce around. :y :y

That is interesting :o :o.  Driving tests, at least for civilians, were  suspended for 7 years from 1939, then for a further year from 1956 due to the Suez Crisis.  At all other times after 1935 officially you had to take a driving test. ;)

I don't know why the photo licence can't be used instead of a passport.  It has more info on it and everyone who had passed their test would then get one.  Not a driver; then just get a normal passport. I suppose the cost of the combined document would be about £100 though!!!

You just got to be used to the roads Kevin. When youve never driven anywhere else you dont know any better. ;D
That might be the reason I dont have many teeth left actually. :-\ ;D
Having said that, the roads round here are now in a worse state than most Irish roads Ive seen. >:(

Not long.Theres dozens of motorsport events on closed public roads every season,so experience can build quickly. They even compete through the little roads in public parks. I was bemused to see a daft chicane has been installed in that footage from Craigantlet.Dont know how long thats been there, but it wasnt there when I used to marshall there in the late 70,s.
An old mate of mine had a Mini Marcos, which had been built with no expense spared, and its first event was that hillclimb. He lost it on a fast left hander near the and and it broke clean in two when it contacted a tree.He was sat bewildered in the rear part while the front end chugged aimlessly down the road. Larf,I nearly shat. ::) ;D

No, but I've heard of lots of people where entitlements "go missing" when they swap from a paper licence. Have you got any proof that you had it? (i.e. photocopy of your old licence?)

Nope, and I took my test in 82 I think it was, just before the new 2 part test :(

Being honest I didn't even check my old licence for entitlement because I haven't had a bike for about 10 years, I just presumed it would be on there

I "lost" my bike entitlement when I went from the "red book" to the "green paper" licence ... no amount of arguing with DVLC ever got it back ... it is up to you to prove you had the entitlement ... and if you can't they won't budge. I even produced insurance documents for a bike .. nope... didn't prove I held a licence !!. Eventually I just gave up.

Last moved years ago & upgraded from green to red Euro- style paper license.
When it arrived the entitlement for my bike was missing.
No end of calls, letters etc & was told to re-take the test.
Took me months to resolve the problem, then I remebered my employer had a copy of my old license on their files. Sent another copy in & hey presto 4 months later I get a corrected copy sent to my old address!
