Title: Terrible MPG
Post by: omegod on 11 January 2013, 09:29:56
Just done some calcs, 230 miles using 72 litres opf LPG = 14 mpg  :o :o mainly bobbing to work on a very short motorway run and pottering about but still seems crap.

Will give it a service and see if it improves  :(

Low 20's is about right for a 3.2 auto, though. You should be getting better economy than that.

What LPG system do you have?

"Professionally" installed? ::)

Does sound a bit low... I manage 230 miles from 64L of LPG driving "Enthusiastically" on town and fast A roads with lots of roundabouts all day, every day. A little more if driven sensibly and/or on a run. And I know mine is running a little cool as it needs a new stat... It's opening and closing but a little lazy so runs cool ::)

Does your car get up to temperature properly?

I can't get more than 17-18mpg from my 3.2  ???

I get about 19-20mpg from the 3.0, and its driven harder.

Usually LPG gets what, 20% lower than petrol?

My 2.2, would get 30/32 ish on average on petrol. Get 24/25 ish on LPG, have seen 27mpg on very long runs.

So with my 3.2, i get 27mpg average usually, so should expect around 20mpg on gas  :-\

Id like to know your secret Tunnie.I drive my 2.5 (LPG) quite gently and am lucky to get 200 miles from 50 litres.Similar to LD, my car does have a lazy stat (and an owner thus far too lazy to change it),but I dont think that could account for all of the difference.
When I sort out my engine bay this summer (basically, reinstall the front end of the LPG) it might be worth getting someone knowledgable - posssibly someone from Suffolk ?  :D ;D - to do some checks and settting up etc. to check all is still well.

Ignore the level gauge for LPG... They're "temperamental" at the best of times ::)

my lpg mpg is good if i rag her between home and work (225mile ish) i can get 180out of 38 ltrs. if i drive her sensible and shes not full loaded i can get 200 miles.

my petrol is really bad not watched her mpg like i do the gas but it milage counter says i have done 33 miles and i have just dropedpast the 60 litres marker. and i fill her to the gunnals.

Been out on lpg this evening again 115 miles hasn't run out but popped boot and tank reads empty now.
So guess not much more to be had now...

Thats about what my 2.2 used to do on lpg, I know if i did a gatwick run (about 220 round trip) if i didnt stop on the way back and fill up again at reading services, i'd run out about 20 miles short of Swindon.....that was at a pretty constant 70mph tho. Similar size tank.

IME, LPG gives a low MPG if short filled, no idea why, surely not that much is lost in filling?

I would imagine smaler tanks show a similar effect to short filling?

OP here!

It's a Koltec system thats been on it since new. It's great on a run when I have had up to 360 miles on a tank full but seems to be giving shite MPG recently, got a feeling my coil pack is on it's way out which may/may not be related. Will give it that service and see what happens
