I know you can check the mileage from the MOT certificate number, by going on to the DVLA website it goes back quite a few years .

Ask the Seller for the Reg No. and V5 reference number (if no Ref No. then MOT test number from
VT20 test certificate or VT30 refusal certificate.), then go online and view Mileage from the MOT History.

Yes, that is exactly what I did when I bought the Terracan last July, if the seller is unwilling to release this information dont't touch it.

The other option is to spend £3 + £1.50 for a Car Check and Mileage History Check to 83600.

Ok , i have just been sent the mot number . Turns out the mileage is incorrect but owner is foreign .. i can get the car very cheap now that this has been verified . Will go and look at the car and check it over thoroughly  :y

although an exact estimate is hard and depends on the owner usage, there are some things you can check..

for a normal driver (hands avg acidic ;D ) steering leather will have serious wear after 100K (kms)

same applies to gear knob.. driver chair corners start to wear earlier..  and at 100K (kms) holes easily appear if its not leather.. so dont buy anything more than 100K kms ;D

ps: definitely check the tyre to bumper gaps for equality for both sides .. and applies to rear also.. if difference is more than 1-2 mms it has an accident and not repaired properly..

pps: check the bottom for accident traces, oil, coolant, exhaust leaks..

ppps: all door gaps must be symmetric and equal .. also hood sides and positions..

My 406 has done 200,000 miles and the only sign inside is that the outer rim of the steering wheel is a little shiny, seats, carpets etc still look as new :y

henryd, there will always be exceptions  :)

here I bought numerous cars for my friends and this is my experience for long years.. our first hand car owners generally use the car until 100K,  rarely do maintenance and if anything/trouble happens to car immediately sell it >:(

there isa long list to check ,  but these are the most practical items to check at first..

When I look at a vehicle coming from an unknown source, i.e a P/X vehicle I'll try and do the following if I have time;

Carry out the usual MOT/VOSA check to confirm mileage followed by a HPI report.

I'll then look at the vehicle registration plates for any dealer names and also the tax disc holder, as it could again have a dealers website address or phone number.

I'll then phone them to ask what mileage the car had done when they had sold it or worked on it.

If there are any doubts I'll go through the service history, but normally I'll take the vehicle in P/X and put it through auction with the warning of 'mileage unknown, odometer not to be relied upon' if in doubt.
Following the above steps, you should be safe.

I have in the past 15 months started to replace all number plates on vehicles I sell or look after with new one's with my webstie address on them. I often get calls from other dealers or private individuals asking about vehicles...so it does work...if only I ever updated my website to add new stock  ;D

I have called previous owners on the v5 (casually ask to look at v5, and memorise name and address of previous owner).

Hence I didn't buy a 69k Elite in 2003, when the previous owner had a snapped cambelt 2yrs earlier at 105k. Car remained on Autotrader for months....

It's quite easy to check the mileage from the MOT number or V5 number, but how much easier would it be if you could check from the registration number??  ::)  Granted there would be difficulties with vehicles with private plates but the numbers are relatively small and these could be checked with the V5 and MOT numbers...  :-\
