Title: Fault code p0420
Post by: dazzle72 on 21 January 2013, 19:21:27
Got the blowing exhaust manifold done and had codes re-read today as eml came back on. Something to do with cat efficiency which means we need a new cat so I'm told. Is this correct?? Oh, and since the code read this morning the spanner symbol stays on on start up. Switching off and restarting puts it out.

does your exhaust have a leak-split on flexi?

blowing manifold will cause the engine to run rich which could damage the cat but normally this is over a long period of having a blow.  I would check that the manifold has been fitted correctly as a first port of call

Do not replace the cat with an aftermarket one ;)

I'll check whats already been suggested, then re-post with my findings. Fingers crossed it wont need a cat, but thats a bridge to cross if needed

0420 .. put some higher spec fuel in .. shell v-max or similar and drive it like you stole it for a tank full ... :)

Not guaranteed to sort it but often does, another way is to put 1600kgs of caravan on the back and go up Birdlip Hill at 50 .. :)  IME that sorts it out really well :) (but don't look at the fuel consumption gauge while you do it !!!)
