Title: Greasing ball joints.
Post by: car5car on 24 January 2013, 23:08:08
Left one didn't have free play, but was spinning by hand like it was dry (no grease). Right one has very small free play. If I can carefully add grease under rubber boot w/o damaging boot, ball joints will probably work for another year or two.
Did anybody do that?

No grease points = no greasing.

Once the boot splits and the grease is gone they wear.

IMO fit a new one while its off, but needs must.

Now that takes me back, but I still have a grease gun, somewhere..... :D :D :D

Can't see it working, the grease needs to be under the ball. (thats ripe for a few double entendres!)  ::)

TBH, certainly the one with play, I think you're gonna have to bite the bullet, and replace.

Bottom line is that if there is play then the wear has already happened.....

Yep sealed for life ball joints need replacing when greasless and with play.  New grease will not take up any wear.

Oh, get-out-of-jail-free card - I need car for Manchester on Tuesday, and won't have time for alignment before. Guess the track rod will have to wait ;D

Some free play (within specs) is OK for some cars. I'll check Omega manual (thanks, Suzuki guy, I mean Gixer. Which bike do you have?)

I think you'll find for European cars, not detectable play is permitted.  Not sure what the Amercian specs/allowances are.

Which Honda? I had about 30 bikes (old ones), favorite ones: Honda VT1100, Suzuki Bandit 1200, Kawasaki Vulcan 1500. I just bought my third VT1100.
