Title: rocker covers
Post by: scottambrose on 29 January 2013, 08:25:04
changed them yesterday but i didnt quite seal the passenger side one on the front corner and caught the gasket so it didnt seat properly. put it all back together and oil and smoke was coming out. >:( was going to kick it and give up but took it all apart again and changed the gasket incase id damaged it. and double checked it was all seated ok. and used the sealant where nessary.
drove it home only a few miles and it was fine   :)
but this morning ive noticed a small amount of smoke there again. its impossible to see properly as theres a bracket in the way. im hoping its just unburnt oil from the first time it leaked. if it not then im going to cry.  :'(

When I did mine it took a couple of weeks and a few long runs for the smell / smoke to completly go.

Check the halfmoons at the back , easy to knock them out of place when replacing  :y As said it will take a while to burn off if its just excess previous oil leak  :y

Ok, assuming its seated correctly now, I'd get an aerosol of gunk from Halfords and degrease the area, then rinse, carefully, with a hose and engine running.

But if its stopped smoking.....

il try that, it stopped smoking yesterday morning and then in the evening was really bad and then 20miles later nothing, id rather be inhaling burnt gunk than oil. :y

Try a mirror on a stick with a torch, often easier to spot a leak that way ... :)

Make sure you rinse it off, obviously. It's not pleasant stuff.

well ive degreased it all and washed it all off. driven it 10miles. no smoke and doesnt smell too bad. but there seems to be a very thin smear of oil on the edge of the cover along the lip above where it joins the head. as if its coming down from above.

Is it near where the filler neck plugs in? Could unplug it and plug the cap in instead to eliminate, if so?

If the half moons are seated correctly I would pull the coil pack to check if it is leaking into the plug-wells.
