Can starter motors be stripped down and refurbished yourself , not sure of the workings or if anything can be replaced or cleaned ... mine keeps sticking "pug" could it be a loose connection or is it on its way out ???

Take it off and clean off Bendix(thats the bit on end with a small gear) with wd40 then refit mate :y

Provided its electrically ok just ensure bendix is undamaged and runs and returns freely on the shaft. Also worth looking through the starter aperture at the starter ring gear for damaged teeth.

Just had a quick look at bendix problems ont web , will clean out and crud from the shaft and teeth .. also says check battery earth and battery has enough power :y

putting lube on acts as magnet for the dust :y

clean(sand paper) lead terminal that goes on 13mm nut on starter-can lose power there mate

What about carb cleaner then let it dry out :-\

Yep heard that - 2 schools of thought on this - personally I've always lightly oiled em when I've stripped one down and never had issues. Agree to disagree ;)

Things would be much easier with one ;D Ive got use to the windy windows ::)

Because, strictly speaking, the Omega has a 'pre-engaged' starter & not a 'bendix' type. The solenoid on the side of the Omega starter engages the pinion with the teeth on the flywheel & then it spins. A bendix starter will spin the starter straight away, the pinion flies forwards on the helix/bendix and then engages with the flywheel's teeth. The advantages of the later pre-engaged is that there is less wear on either pinion or flywheel because they engage while not spinning unlike the bendix.

Although for the pug i understand the working of it now ;) It does feel like the pinion is moving but not enough to engage so hopefully a bit of cleaning will free it up again (http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p433/jazball18/smiley_pray.gif)

What are the symptoms
The Pug will be a pre-engaged starter and you should feel resistance towards the end of the throw as the start contacts in the solenoid are sprung and there is a spring which acts to disengage the starter.

Turn key then on occasions it will just give a click and wont turn motor , then other times it will start fine :-\
