A question about statermotors in Gen Car Chat got me thinking...... ::) ::)
Early 90's I had a Matra Rancho with an occasional starting problem, that could be rectified by putting a spanner on the back and turning the shaft slightly and it would then work. As these things go it got worse and worse so off came the starter for a 'bench test' a check over, clean and oil and it worked perfectly many times, put it back on the car and it did not work... :-X I took it back off and it worked every time on bench test, back on the car, not working - must have done this 3 or 4 times, and then, after some head scratching decided that the angle of the starter on bench test was different to it fitted - bench test at about the same angle and it did not work - something to do with the bushes? A scrapyard replacement sorted the problem...... :y :y

I remember them. I have read many times that the brilliant idea was actually not. A vehicle looking like it was a 4WD but wasn't. It has been seen as a bad idea in some motoring press.
Talking of wierd French cars. I had a Matra Murena a few years back. The 3 seats thing is a strange concept - but handy at times. Just didn't have any power to match the sporty look.

Not familiar with the Murena but remember the Matra Bagheera had a 3 seat side by side, and iirc only in LHD........... :y :y
