Had a very rare night out last night so me and the better half went to the cinema to see "les mis" (as I believe its fashionably known as). Now, although I'd like to see "skyfall" (which I still havent seen >:(), "Django Unchained" or even "Lincoln" I must be honest and say that it wasnt just SWMBO who wanted to watch les miserables. I've read the book many years ago but never seen the stage production so really only had the reviews to go on . Though Im a bit of a movie buff ,musicals is one genre that I dont really like. I mean all those movies like "Paint your Wagon" and "South Pacific" just dont do it for me. Some stuff Im fine with, but its those where there is more dialogue and the songs are more set pieces rather than those where the dialogue is sung most of the time. Its too much, like its trying to do too much at the same time and reminds me of Tolstoy's (?) comment about opera being the most "insincere" of art forms. I mean I quite like stuff like "The king and I" or "Oliver" and "Hairspray" (The walters/Divine one rather than the Travolta remake) and I quite enjoyed the Richard Gere/rene zeiwegger "Cabaret" and can appreciate "west side Story" and of course "Rocky Horror Show" (even "Grease" :o)but these are more like movies with songs in them. "Moulin Rouge" was OK with some excellent set pieces and was visually very good but I found it all a bit laboured art times because there was too much sung dialogue and "Les Miserables" is a bit like this. THe look of the movie is excellent and there are certain "set" pieces that are really very good whether it be Ann Hathway's much lauded bit or the refreshing (and much needed) comic relief of Sasha Cohen & Helena BC. Hugh Jackman is very good in it -but then so are all the cast , and that includes Russel Crowe who I think does not deserve some of the criticism he got. For me its just a bit too much. If it was a show you'd have a break half way but the movie is quite long and a lot of the sung dialogue is set to quite heavy music which is hardly uplifting (yes, I know thats the point because its all about the put down poor) and the full screen head shots of them singing so emotionally soon leads to emotional overload. STill, overall, I did enjoy it, the performances, the visuals, were all verygood and, yes, I would see it again (later!). Just expect a few tears and snuffles from certin sections of the audience towards the end! ;D What does anyone else think who's seen it?

I really quite enjoyed the film but I doubt it'll be anywhere near the same as seeing it "live" on stage with the atmosphere you get at the theatre. Bit like watching a football game on tv v being there live to watch it. However good the game is and however good/big your tv is ,it cant compensate for that atmosphere.

I enjoyed it. Like the OP I go fairly regularly to the theatre and even go to ballets and operas. I saw Cirque du Soleil at the weekend, me and the wife go every year. I have seen Les Mis on stage about 3-4 times and the film did not disapoint. If you're taking the missus make sure she has plenty of tissues. SWMBO was weeping from the outset.
As for performances they are all solid. Who would have thought that Russell Crowe could sing that well?! I thought he did a better job than Hugh Jackman, but that is my opinion. Sacha Baron Cohen is hilarious but the one who really caught my attention (and my eye ::)) was Samantha Barks (Eponine) not only was her signing fantastic she is quite a stunner as well. I was later informed by the missus that she was found on one of these talent shows that I refuse to watch.
Make sure you go to the loo before you sit down. It is as long as the theatre production and there is no interval. I never get the mid-showing urge to go to the loo but I was definitely ready by the end of Les Mis.
Django was very good although very violent in the way the Tarantino does best. Plenty of blood and gratuitous violence. Although I thought it was a little slow in places, nomrally he likes to keep you thinking and your mind occupied....not so much in Django. It tackles a very disturbing subject and although factually very correct the film mocks the seriousness of the subject at the same time. Which is the reason I feel it has received mixed reviews.
Zero Dark 30 was great. I can see why Congress are investigating the amount of disclosure of sensitive information the producers got. If you dont like seeing or watching people getting tortured then I would suggest renting it and fast forwarding the first 20-25 minutes.

We saw it yesterday,wasn,t looking forward to it myself,BUT I did enjoy it,the wife was really into it.I do spoil her now and then.Downside was £2 for a small bottle of fanta,robbers,not all the theives were in the movie!.

Really not a big fan myself. I don't mind something a quirky like Rocky Horror, or even Cabaret, but Phantom and similar ? . . . . . . . nah, all seems a bit silly ::). It could all be to do with getting dragged to the cinema as a child by my Mum to see South Pacific and Oklahoma numerous times :'( , and I won't even mention The Sound of M . . . . . . Whew almost mentioned it :-X

watched it last night; would have been a good fil if it wasn't for all that singing :-(
Middle portion was IMO, sickly sentimental and the singing in too high a key. Apart from the beginning the poor all looked so clean and well fed. I've been reading the book which I found to be excellent. Glad I saw it at the local multiplex and saved time and money by not going to the theatre. Mrs M-J thought the same.
