I hadn't heard this since 1975...until it was played on Radio 2 today.

Even though it never made the Top 10, I think it's brilliant..and miles better than some of the dross that makes the charts these days. :y :y
Do I sound like an old fogey? ;)

Am I lucky that I cant listen to anything on the PC as the dogs chewed the speaker cables? The name doesnt stir anything in the memory box for me

Old Fogey ? Not at all. I often get one of those nice 'ol tunes in my head that keep me joyfully hummin and a whistlin during my working day. Like this one . . .

with the way things are"

DROSS NickBat? I fully agree with you but surely you could have used a far more descriptive word for the crappy repetitive, indecipherable, wobblegobbing slang filled rubbish that fills the charts and they now claim is modern music? Are there any real songwriters left, or am I too old to realise that its banging repetitive chords and repetitive garbage lyrics that only counts today? What is in the heads of the DJ's who play the rubbish constantly to 'assist' (bully) the rubbish to the chart top? Are they being payment induced to play it cos they cannot all be truthful and say they actually do like it? They do say that money talks though! :D

Might have to buy their greatest hits :y

So, are we saying that the popular and chart music of let's say the 60s or even the 50s were carefull crafted works of sonically sophisticated genius ? Chart music of any decade consists mostly of crap. There is a reason for this, it is aimed at the gullible young of the day 8), not the equally gullible young of yesterday.
How many people let's say over 25yrs give a damn about what it No 1 ? . . ??? or even No 99. None of them, unless they are some way in the business or have a vested interest.
My only bitch about today is the blatent attempts to manipulate the pop music market and fill it with even worse crap by a certain Mr Cowbell and Co >:( >:(

You mean to say The Beatles are not still at No.1! :o :o :o :o :o :y
Now, seriously, they wrote really clever music and lyrics of genius proportions, that has never been equalled (well at least for me!) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Lizzie . . . You'd better sit down. I've got some news for you about John and George :'( :'(
But yes I agree, even now. But I did say "mostly" not all, and even today it is still "mostly" not all.

God, that is shite. ;D

Of course, the thing is that music, like literature and art, is a purely subjective medium and it really is difficult to create any benchmark for what is "good" and what is "sh*te".
The bottom line is that each area (and others besides) exists purely to bring enjoyment to people. The number of people that like a tune, for example, is not a measure of it's artistic integrity, but merely a reflection of how it is received at the time.
In 1986, the Chicken Song spent three weeks at No 1. It is generally agreed that it has little musical integrity, yet people bought because it gave them enjoyment.
I think the output of the last two decades lacks overall musical merit by comparison to earlier decades (in fact, much of it - like Rap - is entirely tuneless IMHO), but it clearly brings enjoyment to the youth of today.
I like what I like. Just like everyone else! :y

I think the year was 2000, strange how music can take you back to events that happened ages ago.
