Title: Summer Weekend Meets
Post by: TheBoy on 03 February 2013, 12:10:03
Following on from previous thread, which kind of got lost in the middle....

We choose locations to get the most coverage possible - which is why I think the Chester option is possibly not ideal, being only a relatively short way from Newent.

If there was a triangle of meets - North (Lakes, York, higher?), SW (Newent), SE (maybe Herts/Bucks/Cambs), would more people be interested in attending them?

Please add locations you would commit to attending, then we can add to a poll, and ascertain if there is demand, or if its flogging a dead horse - the ramifications of which do not bode well, IMHO, for OOF.

I'd say, as Newent is established and popular (and hassle free), not really worth suggesting anywhere within a 100 mile radius.

Also, how far would you be prepared to travel for a weekend meet?

Can I ask that those who have no interest keep schtum, and also this is kept on topic. Ta.

Newent is good for me.

Terbert's meet is nicely placed as well, could that be expanded?

If work / children etc allow then we try and attend, unfortunately things went a bit Pete Tong last year.

That would need Terbert to answer for sure, but can't think of anywhere within walking distance to stay. There is a Premier Inn a few miles away.

HOUSE! ;D

How far north do we need to be? For the northern meet?

Thanks for the recommendation........

However, as TB says, whilst we have good meeting facilities, the hotels/Premier inns are all minimum of 3 miles away.
Had we had caravan and camping facilities it would be have been an ideal venue.  :y

He's playing winkword bingo again :-X ;D

To stay on topic though...

You already know my answers. It would be nice to have one that was sub 200 miles from home but if it fits around our other commitments we will be coming to as many as we can :y

Maybe thats one for those living in Northern England or Scotland to answer.  If there is little demand, and all members who would attend are south of, for example, Manchester, then maybe the Peak District, is more suitable. Or even lower  :-\

For me, about 100-150 miles is as far as we tend to go.

So thats an arc covering Cumbria, most of Yorkshire, Derby, past mine, down to Bristol, give or take?

Further to my other post, those that do come to the Wycombe meet know our facilities. Really, the only way to expand on our meets, would be to do a dinner and dance or something on those lines in the evening with the normal meet during the day. This would obviously require the use of the two Premier inns within 3 miles, and maybe minibus or taxi for those wanting to make a good night of it.
Numbers would have to be 100 or more to make it worth the effort.
I have good contacts for music, (and I think a certain member could be enticed to do a turn...Al  :y)

Its possible.....but down to membership enthusiasm :y

ABS hold a monthly meet on the third wednesday of each month from 8pm at the Red Lion in Witham, Essex. All are welcome to come along to help us put the world to rights and maybe chat about cars now and again.

TB  . . 200 miles  ish max for me being realistic.

Problem is with my location ,I am stuck on the bottom corner of Essex surrounded by wet stuff !

So not exactly a"central" position  :( :(

But SWMBO & I would always consider  what ever is arranged.

For example : We are going to Burton on Trent this coming weekend to The Red Barons nosh night .. about180 miles I think  :o :o

Also don't think I'll ever get SWMBO to try camping  ::) ::) ::)

Rutland or there abouts :-\ had a bit of a rummage around there, but alot of the sites seem to be quite fussy :-\

Failing that, how about a rural Travel Lodge. Only requirements are facilities, a car park, easy distance of local sites/attractions, somewhere to cook/eat  ::)

Or perhaps a group cruise on the Thames or the Norfolk Broads :-\ a bit less car based perhaps, but choose the right boatyard and they have plenty of space for messing about with cars/kick abouts and noise not such an issue. Also a longer break is better value for those with families or who need to travel a bit further.

This is a problem country wide IMHO. I know from my efforts in the past that many most sites are reluctant to take groups, let alone a group of car enthusiasts ;)

I glanced at the websites of three near Rutland, and they all basically said "lights out at10.30, followed by silence" :-\

So, no cutting up firewood with a circular saw / mad axeman followed by the annual smelting contest, then?

Can't see that happening, TBH. :(

There's a lot to be said for the sites we currently use at Newent and Keswick in that respect. A meet without a ruddy good P*ss up into the early hours just wouldn't be the same, IMHO.

We found a site down in Sussex that were happy to take us, although that may have changed :-\

I know the Travel lodge suggestion was perhaps a bit tongue in cheek, but Friday to Monday, 1st full weekend in June is £21 per room, per night for upto 9 rooms at the one just to the west of Peterborough.

Not sure how many rooms they have, but if we were a bit organised we could perhaps commandeer a whole one for a long weekend :-\

Most Travel lodges have 40+ rooms IME ;)

40 rooms for three nights at £20 each is a group total of £2400. Assuming 60 people come along then it works out at £40 per head for the whole weekend :y

Booking the whole place would guarantee the outside space as well :y

I think it would be a struggle to get 40 rooms booked TBH ::)

Plus they won't do them all at £20 per night, that price will only be for a maximum of 10-15 rooms I would think ;)

Good idea though :y
