whilst driving home from work tonight, had a warning came up on the display brake pad . Am i right in thinking that this relates to front pads :-\ or are there sensors on the rear pads.
thanks in advance Noel :y

FL 2.6 ??? only one sensor I believe .. (my FL 3.2 only has one on the near side .. :) )

There will be a fair amount left on, so no desperate hurry, unless you drive hard (worn pads fade qiocker).
TC pads are around £15 for a set, sensors around £8 each. Plus vat, tc prices.
TC pads are recommended (OE at around £90 a set are a slight improvement, but not worth the cost).

Indeedy, 1 sensor from 2001

Really? :o :o My FL 3.0 has two, so did Vx cut it to one, on one side, to cut costs? I suppose brake pads do usually wear in equal proportion, but there is always a chance that one goes quicker than the other due to a disc problem. ;)

Have a look at your pads first before you buy any new ones. As the disc wears with use, the un-worn lip on the very edge of the disc will cut through the sensor way before you need new pads. :y

I never have to replace my sensors... ...in Milton Keynes, you know when pads are about half worn ::)
-
thanks for the replies :y, i do drive it hard at times but not enough to melt my pads ;D ;D
-
on the old (before facelift) there are 1 sensor on the left front pads.
try looking for some Mintex pads, they kome in green(normal) blue(sport) red(track)
I have them blue ones on my 2,5v6 1994 model an i have never had problems with wear or fading, and I even got drilled omni competetion discs on. they still last about 40.000km
photos can be uploaded if interested

Switched to one sensor around 2001, my 2000 used to have 2 sensors. FatherT's 2001 only has single sensor. :y

And my car has none.I binned the damn things.Annoying pita imo. :)

Couldn't agree more. I know some people like to have things which should work to work, but when that thing is completely useless, time to get rid IMO.
If you service and inspect your own car properly, you know how many miles you have left! :y

Couldn't agree more. What's the point in having something that gives a warning for 1.) the correct reason of your pads bing low or 2.) because its a faulty sensor ::) cut it, tape it up out the way and check them manually every so often
-
I see no problem in having these kinds of things, but if you're going to get shut of them, why not get shut of the low coolant level, low oil level, low washer bottle and all other 'nice to have' sensors on the car too? ::) ::)
-
Mainly because brake wear sensor tells you your pads are worn out when they are only half worn and they often break when your removing them anyway.

You need a small pin punch :y :y :y

I prefer the audible warning. ;) ;D

I once had that from the back ....... :-[ :-[
fortunately the audible warning was soon enough to save the disc

Because some BMW owners bought the wrong car and don't want to get thier hands dirty or even know where the brake pads are.
Although sensors can be misleading to some people. I have a certain brother with 11 plate 530D, who thought his tyres where being pumped up, because the tyre pressure warning was displayed on the dash. ::) so it naturally follows that if the brake pad warning comes on.... ( Oh Sigh...)

You invent something idiot proof, and someone invents a better BMW driver. ::)

Its about 2/3rds worn. At which point, the pads are not really up to much further abuse TBH

Depending on how worn your discs are ;) ;)

well this turned out to be an interesting thread i started ;)

Which bit? When it cuts into sensors, or pad abuse?
Never much lip on my discs, I change them about every 3 pads, so roughly annually.

The story never fails to amuse me :-X :D :D :D :D

My missus got well over 4 years/40K out of a set of TC front pads. ;D

I'm not as heavy on the brake pedal as you. I bought my car 9 or 10 yrs ago & changed the front discs just the once. There are 178k miles on the clock. :y

Wouldnt disagree with that. :y ::)

Although sensors can be misleading to some people. I have a certain brother inlaw with 11 plate 530D, who thought his tyres where being pumped up, because the tyre pressure warning was displayed on the dash. ::) so it naturally follows that if the brake pad warning comes on.... ( Oh Sigh...)

Yep, special. Not all obviously, but an overwhelming majority.
I would add there's a typo, crApple doesn't like "inlaw" and deleted it. ;D

80k here, only one set of front discs fitted. For the guide actually :y
On my second set of pads, so as above, it's all how you drive. :)
Never touched rear pads, in my entire ownership ::)
-
Read the road ahead, and remember that your driving near Silverstone track and not on it.Stuff lasts a lot longer then. :y :D ;D
P.S. Ive never (so far) had to change the discs on either of the Omegas Ive owned and driven regularily.Dont know how long they had been on the cars when I bought them, but havent needed to change them.
I do drive sloooooooowly these days though, and my Omega is probably covering less than 5000 miles per year now,so things dont tend to wear out that quickly.

Read the road ahead
This is key, on my 75 mile drive back to my parents similar to my old commute. I'd only brake a handful of times, it's amazing how many people brake on the motorway for no reason. See many brake while going up hill! ::)
Why not just ease off the go pedal a little earlier ;)

Mine are the originals as well. Plenty of meat left on them. :y Started to think they weren't working but it goes through MOT's so they must be alright. ;) ;D

I do this, but my reason for doing it is so the wheels don't get dusty. ::) ::) ;) ;)

unfortunately teaching standards have dropped and they are not taught to read the road ahead or even anticpate what might happen, they are taught to react to the problem appears in front of them...which unfortunatley leads to braking for no reason and braking going up hill :y
