Post by: plym ian on 15 February 2013, 20:31:25
my windscreen developed a crack today starting from the bottom drivers side and has now ended up half way. started from the corner that has gone white.

going to get it replaced as have glass cover £70 I think. do I phone my insurer first or goto auto glass first? just want to know as never had new screen before

cheers Ian

I went to Autoglass 1st They should get in touch with your insurerers
There may be an excess to pay
Make sure you get a GM replacement not an aftermarket one

Which must be cleaned up before the new screen goes in

As the guys have said, its the rust causing the problem, it swells up and cracks the glass. The white area is the pressure from underneath.

Autoglass will be able to tell if your covered for windscreen damage from their system. :y

I had to phone the insurance first[£60 excess with mine]they then sorted it with autoglass who thencontacted me to arrange fitting. If I'd gone straight to glass company I'd have had to pay £100 excess. So check your insurance paperwork,it may save you some dosh!

If you decide not to go down the insurance road for whatever reason. I got a new windscreen from Phoenix Windscreens in Exeter last year for £130. They also have a branch in Plymouth.  :)
