Title: P1700 code on a car i'm looking at
Post by: tigers_gonads on 18 February 2013, 14:17:01
p1700 request front right transmission code on a 3.2 mv6 auto

What does this mean ?

No other codes present but aparently the tc light comes on sometimes when the the engine is running and the gear selector is in park

I'd say it means "walk away" ;D

IIRC the only thing you can ascertain from that is that the gearbox ECU detected a fault condition and has asked the engine ECU to illuminate the light on the dashboard.. you need a Tech2 to interrogate the autobox ECU and find out what the actual gearbox fault code is..

Don't really want to "walk away" on this unless I really have to  ;)
Might be a very good day for me if I play my cards right  ;)

Would my  :-X :-X :-X code reader do the job of the tech2 in this case ?

I think so - although I've not tried so no idea how reliable/etc it is :)

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm from the way i'm looking at it, it could be anything from a gearbox oil and filter change needed to a replacement box  :-\

Bugger, I could really do without the stress at the moment  :'(

Basically, yeah .. the code could be a solenoid, it could be gear ratio out of range, etc etc.. it's a long list and you're none the wiser without being able to interrogate the 'box ECU unfortunately!

Though, I suppose, worst case a new gearbox is fairly inexpensive - hassle of getting it fitted aside.  Did it drive alright or bang into any gears?

Not driven it yet  :(

The car is a 4 hour round trip away so i've been getting as much info as possible off him first.
To be fair, the bloke is very upfront and has gone well out of his way to answer any questions.

Might have to bite the bullet and go for a drive.
Should be able to do it on about 30 quids worth of lpg if I take it easy  ::)

D'oh, nowhere near me or I'd have offered :)

I'd say maybe stick a thread up in Gen Car Chat with a title something like "Anyone near Boston (Lincs) who can look at a car for me?" and I bet there'll be someone over there.. although it's a bit out of the way, OOF seems to have someone near everywhere! ;D

Ask him if it's had a flat battery recently ;)

Really  :o

Does that match up to the tc light in park with the engine running that appears now and again ?

Just talked the missus into taking the mutt for a jog on skeggy beach tomorrow so i'm going to pop and have a good look / plug my laptop in.
Never driven a auto before so any pointers welcome.

Nope, doesn't match that but if the battery has gone flat and it's been jumped then it can give a 1700 ;) Mine had it when I did the pedal test before negotiating ;D

As for tips... You're looking for nice smooth changes up and down... 4 distinct gears plus "lock up" (which feels like a half change) in 3rd and 4th. Sports button (on top of shifter) should turn on a dash light, snowflake button should light up when pressed. When shifting from one position to another the indicator light should move with the lever and the other shouldn't flash/light up :y

I had this code some time ago and changed crank sensor and atf. I maintain it was crank sensor causing problem as gearbox reading wrong engine speed . Kevin Wood may remember this as he tech 2d it and no issues stored after

I hope it isn't the crank sensor, i'm going down tomorrow to drive it  :)

If it's been stood a while and needed a jump at any point it can also cause it IME ;) Like I said, mine had it when I first viewed it and it's not come back since and no need to change CS either (yet :-X) ::)

I bet I get a CS fail in the next couple of weeks now ::) ::)

Just had a chat with him.
Apparenty he has been to Norwich and back in it today without a flicker of a light coming on  :y
He has read the codes but NOT erased them so fingers crossed for tomorrow  :y

Out of interest, whats the approx cost of a AR35 oil and filter change ?

Had a look at the listing for this one myself. Decided against bidding though. It has problems and no cambelt history.Could easily turn out to be a money pit imo.Ive had one Omega like that, dont want another one. ;)
