Flicking through you tube I found a road test of a 2010 Lada Niva, back for sale in the UK bit more searching and found this..........
http://www.markkey.co.uk/meetniva.html
I have been off road, a couple of times in them, and they are excellent off road, though I favoured the 'Cossack' version...... :y :y
-
Someone at work had one of those cossacks , he use to ride around with a blow up doll in the passenger seat ..her name was kylie ;D
-
Took a test drive in a new Cossack in 1987 complete rubbish, even the salesman had to agree! The brakes were almost non existent, ended up buying a year old Nissan Patrol LWB terrific vehicle.

BUT on the other hand i`ve seen them tow a LR110 and caravan off a muddy site and get in and out of situations other 4x4 vehicles wouldn`t attempt, great 4x4 let down by poor manufacture and fitments..if only they could get their act together it could be a stonkin` little motor...
-
i had an old cossack i did her up superb off road 5 link rear end better than a landrover on the road at the time, bit utility for today unless your a farmer.

thats what i remeber about them non exsistant brakes...the braking distance was calculate using a calender :y
-
But they seem bomb proof. A lot of farmers around here use them.
I saw a chap load an incredible amount of bricks, bags of powder, cement and the likes into one and then drive off. It must have been on the rear bump stops.
-
remember putting twin cam fait engines and roll cages in lada's as they were a bit stronger than the 124 fait mirrorfurys. stonging rally car.
-
I used to work for a lada dealer back then and rember we had to sell these at loss and make it up on the bonus from lada for reaching our sales targets
-
As I said earlier complete rubbish, lots of better 4x4 vehicles out there to choose from.

And the difference in price was how many thousands of pounds? you get what you pay for, and the Lada is well known around the world for being excellent off road, for it's class a little like the 4x4 Panda of the same era, the ' Sisley' iirc, a very competent off roader but you would not compare it to a Range Rover - mainly cos it would be to small to pull the Range Rover off the rough stuff.... :D :D :D
-
+1.. :y
-
It seems there was / is a GM version!

It was called the Bognor Diva in Uruguay. I thought he was a member on here.
-
I was about to wonder why they havn't updated the styling, until I looked at Rods wiki link. The original is much better! :)
-
You won't convince me, still think they were & still are rubbish .
-
Regarding the price query, the Nissan cost me £9250.00 as I said it was 1 year old ,the Cossack was around the £7000.00 mark, would have possibly got a discount as it was a cash purchase , the dealer/salesman had virtually every make available & as my main concern was reliability he advised against any thing made by Land Rover. No matter how much or how little you pay for a new or fairly new vehicle you would want to feel safe in it , the Cossack did not give me that feeling ,I just liked the idea of a new vehicle for what seemed a reasonable price, for about £2000.00 more I got a far superior vehicle in the Nissan, I have had several other 4x4s since & currently run a Hyundai Terracan which really is an excellent value for money vehicle.

So you downgraded from a Nissan to a Hyundai, a braver man than me, but whatever floats your boat, each to their own, thats why we have a choice... :y Personally I will stick with the Jeep Grand Cherokee...... :y :y
-
No not a downgrade, certainly nothing to be brave about unless you have experience of a particular vehicle .I would not rubbish the Jeep because I have never driven one, I did look at one or two & then checked on the reliability index about them which put me off so I purchased a Subaru Forester which I ran for 7or 8 years & was excellent. The Hyundai has also proved to be an excellent choice ,I was considering a Land Cruiser but would have had to have a model a few years older than the Hyundai the reason I like this is because it is so similar to the Nissan ,which alas is no longer available & when I change this I will purchase another Hyundai as having just recently seeing & driving their newest 4x4s they are superb.
-
Guys, we in the Soviet Union had nothing better in terms of affordable, simple and capable offroader that was meant for the masses (well, there was UAZ-469, but that was a para-military Willy's Jeep rip-off). Besides, you could (and often had to) mend it on the side of the road (or, more often, a field) with a hammer. It was (and still is) just a no-nonsense workhorse.

Sister in Law had on and a terrible experience, may simply have been a bad one to be fair, mind they did go out and buy a Ssanyoung something 4x4 so perhaps that says something in itself...... ::) ::) :D

Nice post Karolis, a reality check for us perhaps....... :y :y

A colleague at work had a Ssangyoung Musso 4x4 terrific looking vehicle, but had difficulty getting genuine parts for it had to wait ages for brake items, sold it recently & purchased a large Citroen to tow with. Took a huge loss with the Musso .

I have heard that too, but not said anything..... :D :D I think he has the Rexton, if so the Engine and auto Gearbox are from Mercedes so parts for these are OK........ ;)

They're Mercedes in the same way that early Daewoo are Astra/Cavalier; things like cambelts are one tooth extra, and so aren't interchangeable. I'm sure you can figure out how we discovered that! And you think that M/B parts left over from the early to mid nineties is a good thing?

That's interesting........ :-\ Just got me wondering about my Jeep, tis a 2.7 CRDI Turbo mated to an auto Gearbox, also Mercedes, my local dealer is Mercedes and Chrysler and the suggestion was they were the same, ie got a part from Merc stock as Chrysler did not have...... :-\ :-\ :-\
-
Having had Mercs from the late eighties & early nineties ,that was probably when build & parts quality were at their best.About 18 months ago I sold my 1990 190e all original no rust at all, & I could go to my local dealer & obtain all service parts off the shelf ,anything they did not have they would get in 24 hours & once they even delivered a new wiper blade to my house FOC, out of all car manufacturers they probably keep parts in stock for the longest.

Dont knock the Ssangyong, admittedly the 2.7td has had its share of problems, which are mainly electrical based, but the 2,9 Rexton, which is basically a musso with a new suit on is a very capable vehicle..merc engines which run for ever, and can run on vegetable oil which is about 50-60p cheaper than pump prices.
The Ssangyong owners club ( of which I am a mod) has a brilliant set of knowledgeable members (similar to the guys on here) and an extremely good list of parts suppliers for both new and 2nd hand parts.
-
I have been told that the 2.9 in my Terracan is also a Mercedes diesel engine , performs well & good mpg .

Tilbo
Is it the 5 cylinder engine ?, has it got a Bosch pump ?, if so you can run it on veggie oil, preferably the new stuff, unless its been very well filtered.

Can they? I was told no, more info please, merc 2.7 in the Jeep 55 reg..... :y :y
-
Merc 2.7 engine fitted in the newer Rextons............ NO.. :'(
Merc 2.9 as fitted to the early Rexton and Musso..... YES.. :y
you can not run any Common Rail Diesel (CRD) engine on veggie
-
Thanks for the info, but I will stick with the normal stuff ! Not sure how many cylinders will check through the literature I have ,have read a lot of stuff about not using supermarket diesel in this engine so have always used BP.
-
Hi, sales brochure engine spec.. 4 cylinder DOHC/2902cc..Hyundai Terracan. As I said I have been told by other owners that this is a Mercedes engine, whether this is true or not I don't know, no details about fuel pump/system.
-
Hi, not sure about that one, "normally"as long as it has the BOSCH pump its ok to use veggie, but think it requires abit more checking before veggie was used.
2nd thoughts..thought Hyundai used their own engines...hmm not sure
The 5 CYL version is called the OM602 engine, same engine as in the earlier Sprinter vans

I had a niva in the eighties, good off road, but terrible on road, I once missed a turning completely as the brakes were that bad,
I remember when you parked, everything you had turned on radio, wipers, heater fan etc had to be turned off again, nothing was wired from the ignition but the engine.
the starter motor packed up, the dealer said it was a 3 hour job to swap, I did it in an hour with long socket extensions, he offered me a job.
