Title: Acme bolt thread??
Post by: omegod on 22 February 2013, 13:30:32
I am botching together a device to pull out a wheel bearing using a harmonic balancer remover and washers but need a nut with an acme thread, local engineering shop says never come across one?

Any OOF engineering geniuses come across one or more to the point what are they used on? I may be able to track one down with this info.

Shame you're not in Wiltshire . ... Mr Sassenach would probably make you one in less than 5 minutes :) .. or let you use his existing home made tools for wheel bearings ....  which are incredibly effective  :)

Does it have to be Acme? That would suggest you're using an existing threaded part.
If that isn't the case then an ordinary large diameter coarse thread works well in pullers/extractors. Especially if it's for limited use. The one I made to extract my rear hub uses a nut welded to a plate in the end of a piece of tube, and acorresponding bolt for the force. M18 threads effortlessly did the job. A hydraulics or proper fastener supplier will sell you this sort of stuff cheaply if you plan ahead;on a Sunday afternoon Screwfix was my only option.

Indeed the threaded rod with the puller has the ACME thread on it which will pulll the bearing out from behind, but not without a bloody nut it won't  ::) >:(

Use a smaller diameter length of studding and a couple of appropriate nuts? Tension the assembly with this 'tool' and give the drive part a whack with a hammer to free the bearing. Then wind it out with the thread. A nut gun is very helpful.

Cheers guys, got someone hopefully providing some threaded bar and nuts.

Acme threads are a square section and can generaly withstand an increased load, trouble is there far from 'standard'
