I have noticed an increase in advertising for the TA or Reserves for the Army and Air Force and have just seen an article on the news where the aim is 20 per cent, couldn't find the key, or our forces are to be part time, absolutely NO disrespect to any who are; but at a time of making Military personnel redundant are we trying to provide a defense service on the cheap?.............

Sounds like it to me. Having seen first hand what state a tour of duty in a sandy place leaves a soldier of 25 years in, I wonder how many employers will be happy to release reserves for service once they start getting into the thick of it on a regular basis. ::)

I theory, they have to keep your job open for you.
In pratice, you would get a letter in the post while out making sandcastles saying that "they are sorry but you have been made redundant / laid off due to lack of orders / work :-X
You can bet your life that when you get back, somebody else will be doing your job and the excuse will be ............. sorry bud but we needed somebody to start straight away >:(
Going back to GW1, i'd only been out of the mob about 12 months and I got a letter telling me that I may be called back up as a reserve. I'd just started a new job (6 weeks before) so I had a word with my boss.
I was told that if I went, I would be "surplus to requirement" when I got back >:(

I'm sure the French would happily help defend/retake The Falklands if needs be.... ::)

That's pretty much what I have witnessed some years ago, wrong imo but understandable.....
I gather it is different for Medics as they can learn a lot....... :( :(

The territorials are well trained and do a good job as a part time army. But they cannot perform as well as a regular. This will lead to higher casualties.
Personally i do not think that reducing the armed forces to the extent that the present governement are doing is a wise thing to do. We have the best trained forces in the world. but as things are we would not be able to protect ourselves in the case of a large scale war. After the 1st world war it was said that it was a war to end all wars and guess what.

Our armed forces are already bigger than our economy can sustain....you have to cut the cloth to fit

The goverments first duty is the defence of its people and that should take priority over everything.
What this country needs is a armed forces that is geared up to defend the United Kingdom and our interests.
Not holding America's hand everytime there defence industry decides to have a little war somewhere :-X
To me, that means ditching most of the tanks and asociated stuff that was in germany and making us into a mobile force with the best equipment available.
We are a island nation and most of our world interests are islands but we have no navy to talk of anymore.
We have to ask the chuffin french if they wouldn't mind protecting our sea ways because of the joke that was nimrod mra4 .
We have closed just about every airbase we had or we turn them over to the army so they have somewhere to store all the old kit. :(
And the first thing they do is dig the runway and standings up so they can make a few quid on hardcore >:(
But hey, as long as we can send 1% of our GDP abroad to "so called" 3rd world countrys like India so they can afford to pay for there nuclear weapons program then that ok then .............. the NHS can do without the modern cancer drugs or the extra nurses that we need >:(
This countrys prioritys are so oppsed up, its beyond belief.

That i agree with.

Another thing. Our economy can sustain a much larger armed force than we have now. We are extremely vulnerable. We cannot protect ourselves. If they cut the waste and sold all the kit and equipement that has been accumulated and the gov. took proper controll of these procurement depts. The cost would come down enormousley. When the Iraque war started we were badly equipped even then. This as all obout cutting every thing to the bone and selling the family silver. What happens when there is nothing left.
The one big cut that we could make is get out of the european comunity. Save a few billion there. And at the same time gain our independence back.

War doesn't seem to be what it used to be. Death toll in the 2nd Iraq war was 200,000 to 600,0000 Iraqis, 179 British soldiers. With those sorts of odds soldiering wouldn't even qualify as a dangerous sport.

But we're building two super carriers and spending £34,000,000,000 on nuclear submarines. Russia has no carriers, China has one second hand one they bought from Russia. The Nimitz size carriers we are building are 3 times the size the Ark Royal was. An aircraft carrier is not really a defensive weapon is it?
