According to our local news the multi-billionaire Clive Palmer has announced today that he will go ahead and build a full scale replica of RMS Titanic, which will be named Titanic 2.
The general plan of course was first announced last year, but now it is going ahead.
Our Meridian TV Station that covers Southampton has also reported "unhappiness" amongst relatives that this ship will be built as they believe it is not in keeping with the casualties of the disasters and their memory which is still held dear in the City.
Not sure myself on that one. I can understand their point of view in part, but what a wonderful memorial this new ship will make. However we must not forget it is being built for one objective; to make loads of money!! ::) ::) All done on the back of the memory of the 1,500+ people lost on the morning of 15th April 1912.
-
Hmm,undecided on this one myself.I've no objection to someone making loads of money, but it seems to me he'll only do it on the back of the fame/notoriety of the original which seems wrong somehow.
-
I think he's going to have it built in China and not at Harland & Wolff in Belfast though! :-\ That really would be something if it was built at the original shipyard using the original blueprints!! :)
Although profit is the motive, jobs will be created and I'm sure it'll be popular!! :y Not sure I'd fancy the maiden voyage though!!! :o
-
??? "Unhappy relatives"? wasn't exactly yesterday !
-
I think it's a marvellous idea. So the fella is going to make loads of money???? He already has more than any of us will dream of, so not really an issue.
I'm quite sure the likes of me would never be able to afford to step foot on it..... but I'm just thinking how amazing it will be to drive to Southampton, Liverpool or wherever else this epic ship is likely to stop-off and just stare at it for a while.
I just wonder how close to the original it will be...... shouldn't think they will use century year old techniques (or indeed materials) to build it. :-\

No, it wasn't, but in Southampton there are many who are descendants of the 500 crew who were based in the City and lost to the sea. Feelings about the disaster are still strong there and will take at least another two generations to finally fade. ;)

We hope they don't build the hull with the same rivets anyway! :o :o :o :o :D ;)
I certainly would love to sail on her 8) 8) 8) 8)

Interesting points - I wonder how changes in safety regulations will affect the build, and the finished product!
Are there regulations for emissions of ships, like cars or aircraft? :-\
Is there enough Coal left in the World? ;D

Now where were we on that again? ::) ;D

It will certainly be better than the monstrosities they build today like floating high rise hotels. :( :(
It will be a nuclear powered luxury liner :y :y :y

Yes and quite stringent to getting tougher in the next few years
It will almost certainly be a diesel engined hybrid with electrical drive, I just hope they don't build it in China as the quality is awful

This is a quote from the Meridian News web site for last April:
"An Australian billionaire has announced plans to build a replica of the Titanic that will make its maiden voyage from England to New York in 2016.
Weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Titanic, Clive Palmer announced he had signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the "Titanic II".
Mr Palmer said in a statement: "It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems."
He announced plans to build "Titanic II" on the same day that he announced plans to contest the federal election in Queensland, Australia."
The latest news is in on this site:
http://www.itv.com/news/meridian/story/2013-02-25/titanic-to-set-sail-again/
This is a quote from the latest news release:
"An Australian billionaire, Clive Palmer, will today announce he is going ahead with plans to build a full size replica of the Titanic.
It will, of course, have all the latest safety measures, but in all other ways will be the same.
It will have a replica ornate staircase, Turkish baths, smoking rooms, and even the same "Marconi room" where the Titanic sent out its final SOS. Passengers will even be provided with early-20th-century-style clothes and undergarments in their cabins.
The safety equipment will be up-to-date, however, and will include more than enough lifeboats and inflatable rafts for the 2,400 passengers and 900 crew.
So far 40,000 people have expressed interest in going on the ship, to be built on China. Some have offered one million dollars to be first on board, it has been reported."
and.......
"Apart from safety features and the number of lifeboats, Titanic II will differ from its predecessor in another crucial way. It will be built in China.
Palmer has hired CSC Jinling, a state-owned shipyard with no experience building luxury passenger ships, to construct the Titanic II. Contracts are due to be signed later in the year.
But the move to build Titanic 2 has sparked both anger and excitement."

Ah, I am off to the CSSC shipyard in Huangpu next week which is the same company (press have the company name wrong)
So if its being built then give it few years before traveling so they can get it working

I would have thought the money would be better spent bringing up the original :-\

That length of time in the salt, it will have less metal left than the rear arches on a Cortina! ;D

You would never get it an inch off the bottom without it disintegrating plus its a grave

And in half !

I've watched a lot of documentaries on it. There have bee several attempts to lift it, two almost successful but apparently it costs too much? In this day and age bearing in mind the rewards that would come with it.
As for it being a grave.... there's a lot of people who think it would be wrong for that reason. me personally i'm not one of those. i'd like to see it brought up :)
-
My next door neighbor has not problems with it being build, although his granddad the Titanic's helmsman "Robert Hichens" survived, and he wouldn't be here if he hadn't as his dad was born after the Titanic disaster.
From what I have read it is going to basically be a "Titantic theme park" with a broader beam, more decks etc, etc.
I would have thought modern fire regulations would also restrict the use of inflammable materials like wooden paneling.
I also can't see the third class passengers in this day and age putting up with communal heads and only two bath tubs. One for men and the other for women. :o :o :o :o
Still I expect the maiden voyage tickets for Third class to be authentic and will be something along the lines of: "Southampton to New York via Davy Jones Locker". :o :o :o :o

If they build it to the original blueprints it'll probably sink ??? ??? ;)

Only if it hits an Iceberg causing the sub standard rivets, on the hull, to burst...... :-X :-X

Harland & wolf shut down years ago.My dad worked there many years ago (worked on the Canberra) when 35,000 people worked there.
The old site is now the Titanic quarter, where there are exhibitions, museums etc. to amuse the tourists.
P.S. There was nothing wrong with the ship.Just an idiotic captain. ;)

Are you sure? did the, now proven, cheapskate quality of some items not show to be it's downfall, had quality parts been used the story may have had a very different outcome...... ;) ;)

Sorry Lizzie, must be the wrong site for millionaires ;D
all the money is spent on the cars! :y

I seem to remember the film Titanic was made around money, and on the backs of those who died (if thats the right expression) No one seemed to bother about that :y
Whats the difference in building a boat :-\

From the minute the keel was first lain down at Harland & Wolff she was doomed. A whole catalogue of events and decisions led right up to the moment she hit that iceberg at 2340 on the 14th April and finally sunk at 0220 on the morning of the 15th April 1912. It "was written" and no one could have changed the fate of the ship, it's crew and passengers. :'( :'( :'(

Yup I remember seeing that too, the water tight bulk heads in principle were a great idea and should have worked. It was the standard of the rivets that were the issue, if they had been better it could have been a different story.
Thing is although it was a huge disaster, it changed shipping for the better. Sooner or later it was going to happen :(

Plus Titanic is a pretty small vessel by modern day standards

Except they did not go right to the top, so as the ship sunk, they were progressively breached by water flooding over the top of them. There was also a problem that in their hast to re-coal in Southampton, the coal was not sufficiently damped which caused a fire in a coal bunker that had to be put out, but the heat from this seriously weakened the forward boiler room bulkhead which eventually gave way. There was a real battle to stop the flooding of the forward boiler room as once this flooded they knew the ship was lost.
