Title: missing man in sink hole , search called off

Saw this on TV these last few days. A truly horrible scenario. So many unaswered questions.

I feel for the family. No one deserves to lose a family member that way. I cannot believe they couldn't /wouldn't recover the body.

It all seems very strange to me.  The hole is 50-60 feet deep which with the right equipment isn't that deep I wouldn't have thought?  :-\

I can understand concerns about any further collapses, but I wonder how much the Heath & Safety rules are hindering the search and rescue effort?  ::)  :(

I think it is to do with the geology of Florida. It is primarily lime stone and very very hollow. The average is about 2 sink holes opening every year, and in very dry years it can be as many as 6 in a year.

Sad as it is you cant just dig them out i am afraid. The hole could just collapse into a massive cave killing everyone trying to get the person out.

"I heard the news today oh boy,
four thousands holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
and although the holes were rather small
they had to count them all
now they know how many holes it takes
 to fill the Albert Hall
I love to turn you on"
