Title: Made it home with blown HG
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 10 May 2008, 01:19:20
Made it home tonight, about 130 miles with the blown HG

Didn't lose much coolant on the trip, kept at a steady 75 all the way home. lost most of the oil though  :o It sounded like a bag of spanners when I got back.

It took almost 4 litres to get to the top of the stick, but thankfully sounded sweet as silk afterwards, so I hope I've not done any damage?

First 15 miles didn't miss a beat. Stopped for petrol, she only JUST started again, and ran very rough for a bit.. .but then smoothed out once I got on the motorway. Low down torque was non existant, maybe cos of the blown HG!

Oh well, she's home anyway, time to pull the head off and see what's going on...

Btw, anyone got a spare AR35?

The Autobox started slipping by shrewsbury under high revs - I sincerely hope it's just low oil, otherwise I'll be popping a replacement box on there too  :'(

I was determined to get home, although I must admit, when I had about 100 miles to go and it was shaking like a leaf at one point, I thought "god I'm silly" !

I just couldn't maintain 60mph, it didn't have the torque. Had to keep it nearer 80.

Thankfully, it wasn't "dumping it's coolant" until stopping, so at a steady speed it was ok for the trip.

Definately made the right choice to do it late at night when quiet..

I suspect I'll take the head off later today (Saturday).. get  it skimmed though the week during which time I'll do things like breathers. Then hopefully next saturday, head rebuild and valve lap, and next  Sunday get the car back together.

Then look at the autobox.
