Title: 1.8 i vtec
Post by: Aundie on 10 March 2013, 22:22:28
Just lost my mig to make way for a 58 plate Honda frv ( needed the extra seat) car quite good so far and surprisingly quick but there is a serious lack of lowdown torque! I'm endlessly changing gear. Do any of you know how to get a bit more grunt out of these engines?

that's simple - just use more revs.

the VTEC sacrifices low down power and torque for more power-per-litre higher up the rev range.

just think of your normal power curve, but shifted up a couple of thousand revs

time to explore the 7000 + part of the rev range my friend.

When I had my old prelude (which had the first generation 2.2 vtec engine) I got it remapped and changed the vtec activation point to 3000 revs.which helped, but as already said, with the vtec you get good bhp but comparitively low torque figures. As an auto mine redlined about 500 less than the manual but still did 0-60 in just over 6 secs and was making around 200bhp . Im sure you used to be able to get a "bolt on"bit of kit too that would alter the activation point of the vtec? Thinking about it , whilst getting the vtec to activate was sometimes a bit hit and miss (the car needed to "warm up" a bit and the oil pressure had to be right), I still miss that "old school" vtec sound!

+1.

I had the same issue with my Accord 2.4 V-tec .........

Guess I need to get used to a screaming engine! Not too good in the snow, better than mig though! Thanks for the thoughts people.  :)

Similar to a Mazda RX8 in that respect.

I don;t know much about the VTEC other than it's basic principle. however for all your honda ''how-to's'' look at eric the car guys channel on gaytube. he's a honda expert  :y
