Title: New arrival
Post by: Jimbob on 12 March 2013, 21:38:34
We've been debating this for a while, especially as Harry (our eldest) seems to really bonds well with Greyhounds as Simon (dad1uk) can testify - You can hardly separate his greyhound Jay and Harry at meets!  A rare bond for Harry, as he doesn't do relationships due to his Autism.

So weve finally done it, and adopted ex-racing greyhound Jack

We picked him up last Saturday, and he is settling into family life well, The kids both love him.

As said, now known as Jack, was previously known as Devil Fish in his racing days, where he won 9 out of his 31 races!

Very nice.

Emma's aunt has recently taken on a greyhound. She was told they take their retirement very seriously, and I can see Jack has already earmarked his spot in front of the TV. ;D

Excellent and well done you for giving him a great home. We're currently on our second rescue pooch. He's called Hero as he had a very bad start in life yet he has forgiven us humans and im my eyes that makes him a right hero. I prefer his alternative name of " Mahogny head" as he is a staffie/mastiff first cross you can imagne the size of his Swede  ::) ::) ::) ::)

Yes, they are very much couch potatoes, and easy to wear him out on a walk..  Not surprising as he has been 'kennelled' for a few months.

Does enjoy his walks though, taking it in turns really as to who does what at the mo.

Well done James. He looks to be well settled in already. At least you seem to have taught him that the floor is where he belongs ...... Molly seems to think that the couch is hers  ??? ??? Probably because SWMBO lets her!  :-X

We vowed Willow wouldn't be allowed on the furniture but have given in and allow her up when invited ::)

Thanks, yes, he has taken well to his 1/2 duvet and knows its his space..

In a dvd they give you, they say you will swear they have lived in a house before they take to it so well!  and its been proved right so far.  No accidents (yet) been very well behaved considering its a huge change for him.

the retired greyhound trust (well the merseyside branch in Warrington) have been really helpful and supportive, from the initial home visit, to selecting a few dogs they think would suit, the dog meet and greet, and finally the pickup..  They even supply collars, coats, food etc to help get you started, and thats after the neutering, chipping, dental, health check, insurance trial etc.  All for a very reasonable 'requested donation'

I'd highly recommend them.

Our old Lab is not even allowed upstairs let alone on the furniture, she can't understand that the cat can do both........ :) :)

Stairs are another one again - theyve never normally encounterd them

They can often get up if they want (ours has shown no interest)  but getting down is another ball game for them.

(the trust didnt seem impressed when I suggested gravity always wins ;) )

what about grass as a friend adopted an ex racer and it did'nt even know what grass was...she would'nt stand on it for at least 2-3 months(the dog that is)

This one has no problem with Grass.

Was certainly walked on it whilst waiting rehoming.

The centre had a large paddock.

Cant beleive we have only had him a week now, seems like he's always been here.

Fitted in really well, very well behaved.

Get better greetings off him whenever we come in, always please to see us, seems a joy to have.

congrats jimbob very nice looking greyhound , doggy was an ex racer from the trust, they really are lovely dogs so much carachter. the way its going the next meet could be a greyhound event ;D ;D wifey really wants another one but we just do not have the space besides i would never get on the couch.

The only problem with these dogs if i am honest is how attached you get to them

Well done the Jimbob family!!!!
I am so pleased that Jay was such a good ambasador for the Greyhound breed. They are certainly a fantastic breed and as you mention they do adapt to home life very well. The only downside is you lose your boot in the car lol!
You mention Jack's coat is coming along well, just a suggestion add some oily fish to his diet once a week, something tinned like mackeral or herring and you will be amazed at how soft the coat will become!
Tell Harry I am very pleased for him but I hope he will save a hug for Jay at Newent.
I think you are realising just how they become a member of the family rather than just a pet.
Well done and I look forward to meeting Jack.

Cheers all.

Harrys bond is coming on well...

He now gets up early to be with Jack rather than watch the tv which is lovely.  He will always have a soft spot for Jay, thats for sure!  He's told a lot of people about him :y

He is getting some fish every few days.....Seems to love Sardines in Tomato sauce the best!
Sometimes just gets a drop of oil on his food too.

No idea how we are going to manage camping yet!
