Shut it down tonight.get a message "do not unplug,1 of 5 updates installing" - this happens quite oftenl.Tried to switch it on an hour later and nothing.Blue led shows power getting to it but it wont power up/switch on. :-\

What op system Albs - Windowsxp, Vista, 7, 8?

In future run the update program rather than doing it on shut down if you see the icon on the task bar ;)
but disconnect power and battery and press the power button, then connect power without battery and switch on

you have to start the operating system in safe mode..
try F8 after bios messages
then use last known good configuration :y

If you let it run its course without interruption then it should recover without safe mode. Is it possible that if you leave it with power connected it is actually still updating?
if it has shut down I suppose you could hold power button down for longer to set if boots. Once got around similar issue by disconnecting and reconnecting a lead to disk drive but your issue does not seem to be exactly in that area.
As said an attempt at safe mode would be good.

I suspect the updates were coincidental tbh.It doesnt matter how long the power button is preesed,it wont switch on.I think its facked. :'(
