Good morning lads I need some help diagnosing a shift problem.The engine revs up to around 4000 r.p.m.when changing up from 2nd.to 3rd.then clunks into gear and then eml light comes on.On restarting the car the light goes out till the next time.I hope somebody can help Thank You lads George.

As said that Solenoid, but worth checking the ATF fluid level in the gearbox first?

Also check around the two gearbox oil cooler pipes at the front lower left of the engine bay near the radiator bottom hose connection as there are short lengths of rubber hose there connecting the metal pipes from the gearbox to the oil cooler & they can be a source of fluid weeping if they have ever been disconnected & the clips not replaced straight.

If the EML light comes on then you should get the codes read as that will tell you what is being logged as the fault.
Also don't rule out other none gearbox items - had a similar problem on mine recently which turned out to be incorrect MAF throwing out the 'calculated load' value causing erratic gearbox behaviour.

That is what it is going to be. I had the same thing. and when you take foot off gas pedal it jumps back in gear.
Do you not get the thud too..
The code you get is... P0730 - Gear Ratio Incorrect..
This is happening with age on the AR25 box

Hello Bigtimecube Those sympthoms are exactly what I have including po 340 incorrect gearbox ratio .The oil in the gearbox was changed about 18 mths ago after being flushed out completely and checked the level today and all is o.k.What is now required to put it right in your opinion Thanks for your input Bigtimecube and all the rest of the Lads.

I spoke about this problem 10 months ago.along with (AMBA)(SASSANACH) it was the 2-3 solenoid at fault..they fail

To sort it you can goto jpat and buy a new 2-3 solenoid (around £100) or go second hand off this site.
They have to be within a certain resistance.(and its very small)sassanach can tell you about this :y
If you decide to fit a second hand solenoid.. it MUST be a 2-3...No other solenoid will work.:ie:when one is off the other is on:
your next choice is to source a new box(that is what i done)thanks to the red baron. :y
To sum up.If you have no problem getting hands on ..then pay the £100 and put a new 2-3 valve in from jpat
ps;I screwed up by having the wrong solenoid fitted(only the 2-3 will fit)(they have tabs on them)jamesvcx can tell you all about them :y :y

Thank you for all your help lads I am going to order a solonoid tomorrow it will take 5 days to get as it has to come from Germany and it costs 127 euro inc v.a.t.which I think is cheaper than ordering from the U.K when you factor in the diff. in sterling and shipping.I will keep you posted on outcome and thanks again to Mr.Cube. George.

P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit No Signal
But that would not make it jump out of gear when changing from 2-3 (and the thud)
It also took ages before i got the P0730 - Gear Ratio Incorrect..code
so looks like OP needs solenoid.fluid.gasket/sealant.and then a £88 cam sensor

im the last person to wanna argue with you .....he has 2 probs ..2-3 and the cam sensor... thats how i see it ..cam sensor dont make box jump gears .....does it

When I was working on mine I made the mistake of starting it with the cam sensor and idle speed control valve unplugged. The C.I.D told me I had a gearbox issue. Best clear the cam sensor fault first and then move on to the gearbox if necessary

I would certainly change the sensor before touching the box - my MAF problem made the box hold gears and bang in and out. I assume because it thought load condition were different to reality.

Sorry Lads I gave you a bum steer I had two codes 730 and 340 I got rid of the 340 it was a loose plug on the sensor as I broke the lug off it the last time I fitted a new genuine cam sensor about 18 mths ago,so now I am only left with a 730 .Im getting too old and doddery its time I was on a lead.Sorry George.
