Title: Battery backup

I cant remember what this was called but it worked and I was wondering if anybody has one or knows where I can get one.

A few years ago I needed to change a car battery and did not have the radio code so I spoke to a mechanic and he came round with a thing that he plugged into the cig lighter socket and he said it would give the car enough power. So he went ahead and change the battery and all was good. Any ideas please because I need to change the wifes car battery and we dont have the codes.
