Title: What web host?
Post by: Allenm on 16 March 2013, 10:58:54
Bit of advice sought please. I need to create a simple website that will have database access and maybe some very simple scripts.  I used to be proficiant in VB so will probably use whatever Microsoft flavour is current.

Question is what hosting service is best - an importantly cheap?  JustHost.com looks like it might fit the bill.

Any other suggestions?

cheers

Dunno, my publisher does all that. However, the new website will be $11 a month hosting.  ???

+1 :y for Fasthosts.

SWMBO has been using them for her (admittedly very simple) web site for 3 years without any problems.

Have got customers web sites on Fasthosts, 1&1 and Plusnet - the worst is Plusnet, both in terms of performance and cost.

All hosts mentioned thus far are awful. Go with hostgator instead, superb  :y

To be honest, you get what you pay for and the budget is not that high. I set up a web site for a relative recently and used Zen hosting, based purely on my experience of them being a decent ISP. I think it was their £3.99 a month package. It works well enough and was hassle-free to get up and running.

I'd expect any hosting at this level to be on fairly well-thrashed hardware so don't expect it to be lightning quick or for support to be that good.

For that reason, just make sure that you get the domain registered in your name and have the facility to administer it online, so that when/if the provider becomes a problem, you can move elsewhere quickly and easily. Consider hosting the domain name elsewhere for this reason. Also, make sure you back up everything at the hosting provider's site regularly. I have had accounts at this price point where the databases have just disappeared overnight when they've screwed up an upgrade and all you'll get from tech support is a shrug of the shoulders.

I'd consider using a popular CMS or basic LAMP stuff if it's just going to be a simple site and avoid anything Microsoft specific, as this will give you more options if you need to move it IMHO.

Thanks for all the responses,  I will go with the basic justhost package and take Kevin's advice on domain and tools (cheers!).

Dont you have FTTP? If so, host it at home ;D

If you want Windows hosting, thats gonna cost. LAMP will be much cheaper.

Mind you, if you have good bandwidth at home, I have run OOF from a £30 Raspberry Pi before. OK, it was noticibly slower, but OOF is a server thrasher.

No, they never went with the FTTP after the trial! I do now have infinity though.

Hosting at home too much work for what it is.  When I did such things for a living, the web stuff was all MS based, hence going with a hosted solution.

I installed MS Visual Studio Web earlier and it would appear things have moved on to the point of leaving me starting from scratch.

Now looking for a good website builder that can run VB code to interrogate other websites and published based on the results.
