During a marathon two-and-a-half-hour session in the European Parliament, MEPs voted on over a hundred amendments to the EU’s controversial Common Agricultural Policy, including one on re-instating direct subsidies for tobacco production farmers, which was accepted. Towards the end of the session, Greek MEP Georgios Papastamkos, who had been chairing the proceedings, collapsed and required medical assistance. The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said afterwards that “We’ve got to find another way to avoid having to sit here for hours voting and, let’s be candid, we sometimes don’t even know what we are voting about in the end.”
