Watch out for plastic vanes on the water pump. They seem to break with age. Cheap to replace with the metal type but a sod to bled.
I've had a couple of 1.6/1.8 in the past both blew their head gaskets.

Underpowered, and the E36 isn't that nice unless it's an M3  :y.

Not a good sign then , best to look over the obvious then first for signs of gasket failure . Just browsing but there is one local to me that has been owned a good few years by the same owner . Mite take a look  :)

The straight 6 cylinder engines much better which you can get in the 3 series. Smoother and no head problems.

Any reason why head gaskets fail ?

water pump and overheating. Alloy head warps and will need a skim if overheated

water pump and overheating

First thing to check and replace then  ;) Need to get something straight though , which of the cars have the 6 cylinder in this model ? Is it the 2.0 and above ? Like del was saying i think the 1.6 will be under powered  :-\

The E36 I use to have was a 2.5TDSE great run around, good on fuel, will agree with the others if it has to be petrol then go for the 6 pot.

1.6/1.8 a bit gutless 4cyl. Go for 2.0 6cyl upwards best. 2.3/2.5 more or less the same engine. 2.8 engine gets the same mpg as the 2.3/2.5. Diesel 2.5 TD pulls really well in the 3 series.

Ok thanks all , why so many of these cars located in london  ;D 2.5TD seems out my price range just now and not that many 2.0 . Have not searched for 2.8 but if it gets same mpg as 2.3 2.5 may as well gander .

EMD any omega with any engine is better than a 1.6 E36..  and avg maintenance costs are higher than the omega even with a small engine..

and most E36s now are for sale with a high cost behind..

I had 325 some 10 years back (e36m50) made only about 15.000 miles with it but the sweatest miles I ever had....that straight six just have THE sound, I couldn't drive it under 4.000 rpm ;D Got 20 mpg average or less....should have that engine under the bonnet now instead of 4pot  :P

Most getting a little rust around back arches but just need tidying . Reports of auto engine/gearbox bullet proof  :-\

I wont take any risk with autos at that age and mileage.. anyway it will ruin 328 :-\

I wouldn't rule out a 2.5TD on price, there really good on mpg and have plenty of torque, more power than the same Mig 2.5TD's depite being the same block. Either way Petrol or Diesel try and get the SE pack. ;)

Been running a 318i touring for a couple of months now, water pump had disintegrated so I got it free. Other than a general tidy up the only thing was a rear wheel bearing which was an absolute nightmare, took the trailing arm off in the end and took it to a shop and it took all of a 150 ton press to shift it.

It's not that powerful, but after a 3.0 v6 what will be??
