At last planning consent has been give today for the construction of a new generation nuclear plant at Hinkley Point, Somerset by EDF.
EDF has now only to give final agreement to build it apparently, but that should be a formality as they have been pushing for this development.

It will take 10 years to build, but it is certainly a step in the right direction. We just now need the go ahead for the others to be built by Hitachi. :y :y :y

So, will they start building it or hold out for an even more heavily subsidised deal for the leccy they generate? ;)

The sooner they build it the quicker EDF will get revenue from it ;) ;)

So, how long do we have to wait before one of these plants does a Chenobyl, and finally kills off this country ;)
Make more use of wind and water, etc (but I don't mean those atrocious windmills)

The technology is not there yet so nuclear is the only real viable option at the moment.
Anyway, I quite like windmills.
Especially with some nice tulips round the base :D

Wind and water are all very well, but connecting such a variable source of power to the grid actually doesn't give us a lot of benefit, and even if they actually generated their full capacity (as opposed to the 20 odd percent they actually achieve) it'd be a drop in the ocean.
We need reliable base load generation that works 24/7. Either that or we have to accept that Big Brother will be controlling our usage of electricity, and shedding load when the wind stops blowing.

I agree! :y :y :y
I especially agree with your second point. I love windmills with all roses leading up to it's base, and pretty, pretty, flowers growing up it's side. Lovely! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)

Yes, back to my serious side Kevin; just this one new nuclear station will power up to 5 million homes.
How many wind turbines would you need to do that? ::) ::) :D :D ;)

As recently as last week the govt and EDF were at deadlock over the price EDF would be allowed to charge for the electricity they generate from new power stations. The govt admitted their position was weak due to previous administrations ignoring future problems,so Im guessing EDF have won the battle and we are in for some (even more)extortionate prices in the future.
Many years ago consumers were told that nuclear power was going to be so cheap to generate,it wouldnt be worth the time or trouble to send out bills. ::) ;D
-
Sa far as I can gather, the starting point is £90 per megawatt generated. About twice the price it is now.

yes but is it powerful enough to run Opti's dehumidifier

He needs it to nullify all of the hot air that emanates from his cakehole.....don't you know. ;D

Just a shame they won't build another one down here at Dungeness instead of playing with those silly windmills. >:( >:(
Btw the wind mills in the Thames estury when finished will only be the same as half a nuke. :D :D

I'm all for a full nuke in the Thames estuary.

Hmmmm ? No protest of Hinkley Point C in Somerset .. very strange ::)

No, as they are used to a nuclear power station being there.
It is the same at Dungeness were in fact the locals are virtually demanding that agreement is reached to build a new replacement plant there.
In both cases it guarantees jobs. :y :y :y

The Government were trying to get a price of £80 and EDF wanted £100, so it looks like they have split the difference. Time will tell on who has got the better deal. If EDF has it will stand, if they go over budget and it is not high enough, they will renegotiate it, so it is completed. :o :o :o :o This is how the MOD and defense contractors work anyway. :o :o :o :o

How long will it take to do a Terbert Chernobyl? That depends, are you or Homer Simpson part of the workforce. :o :P ;D ;D ;D

mmmmmm now who would have thought that lots of little yellow people would be running a nuclear power station :-X :-X :-X
