Title: Rwd cars?
Post by: horsecow on 22 March 2013, 00:35:05
Just out of curiosity and because I've nothing better to be doing I was wondering what modern rwd cars are available in the modern sensible money market eg less than £10,000 and from 00 plate onwards. I know there are the obvious BMW and Mercs, Monaro's and Omega's as well but are there others that I'm not thinking of. I'm sure theres loads but as usual when your trying to put your finger on something its impossible.

But you said " from 00 plate onwards", which meant from 2000 onward, I presumed..

Current Jag XJs are RWD, anyway.

Well.. technically there's still no new MR2, it stopped in '06 ;) There is the GT86 though, that's front engine, rear drive  :y

Wait, Subrau BRZ, just remembered another one (ok so it's basically the GT86 with a different badge on it..)

To borrow a friend's summing up on them:

Quote
The GT86 was as much a disappointment as it was a revelation. For all the poor choice in materials inside, and the underpowered undercharacterised engine, I'm sitting here remembering my drive with a smile upon my face. That sound [exhaust noise piped through the stereo] still irks me, but it's also fun and that's kinda the point of the car. The gearbox isn't great, the brakes too sharp, but when you have the control thrust eagerly into your own hands to allow you push the car at every corner, does it really matter? Toyota said they'd deliver a car that can handle like they used to, and deliver they have. There's a few other promises they've badly let us down on, but this is still a car worth investigating.

He slightly preferred the Subaru BRZ (softer suspension, not quite so lunatic tail-happy, same dull engine) but still wouldn't buy either ;D

Yeah I was thinking of Lexus last night when I posted but could not remember the name ;D. Out of all then which would have the same level of toys/comfort as an omega.

I've heard the GT86 is a bit of a let down on a few fronts but still an amazing ''thing'' to drive.

If that's your bag, why not buy a 2010/2011 RX-8 are save yourself a fortune

RWD.....LSD.....231 BHP......6 speed box ......seats four. The Gt86 is a modern day RX-8, but probably doesn't handle as sweetly or go quite as quickly. :y

Or need rebuilding every 60k (he says, only slightly tongue in cheek) ;D The RX-8 is a great drivers car, though.

Also true. Tales of cars that have covered less than 40,000 miles, which suffer low compression ( fatal for a rotary engine) are relatively common. :-\........as are cars that have covered 100,000 miles or more without any problem whatsoever. :y

So as Dirty Harry would say  "Well punk, do you feel lucky". ;)

Indeed - there were two at work.. one owner wouldn't have another one if you paid him to, the other most certainly would; although even he admitted that at 40k his engine was starting to show signs of rotor tip wear (difficulty starting when hot)..

That would be the LS430 - A proper Barge.  Comfy, not as quick as one would expect from a reasonably sized V8 (295BHP 325lb-ft Torque), but will compare nicely to the Omega in terms of comfort and feel.
